Willow Class Home Learning Page

Hello Willow, I hope everyone is keeping safe at home. I know you have had a work pack sent home to complete, but I just thought I would put on some practical activities to try at home too! These should be fun and enjoyable.

I would love to see some pictures of what you have completed! Once I receive these I will add them to our class page.

Joyeux Nouvel an chinois!!!!

The Chinese New Year starts today, Friday February 12th 2021.  It is the Year of the Ox.

The start date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar, the holiday falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice on December 21.

Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (February 11th–17th, 2021).  Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world, and is the most important holiday in China. During Chinese New Year, red is the most popular colour in China, because people believe that this colour will bring good fortune and scare away evil spirits. Red envelopes are filled with money and given as gifts during Chinese New Year celebrations.

In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. People perform lion dances at Chinese festivals or big occasions to bring good fortune and chase away evil spirits. The lion dance is one of the most important traditions at Chinese New Year. It is performed to bring prosperity and good luck for the upcoming year. The lion dance is also a way to create a festive atmosphere and bring happiness.  The dragon dances an ancient traditional Chinese dance usually performed during Chinese New Year that is said to scare away evil spirits. The dragon dance dates back to the Han Dynasty, 206 AD-220 AD. Back then, the dance was used in a ceremony to worship ancestors and pray for rain. Today, the dance is mostly performed for entertainment. You can see this performance all over the world where Chinese New Year is celebrated.
