A day at the Seaside 4th July

W/C: 27th June

This week we have been to Wild Adventure in Wrea Green , learnt about seaside holidays in the past , undertaken some data handling activities and had a Julia Donaldson day on Friday 1st July

English / Phonics

This week we have redrafted our seaside poem using our senses . Some of us enhanced our poems further by using adjectives . The poems were great and are on display for all to see.

We have also been learning about instructions . After identifying why we need instructions and some of the features we produced our own instructions ( linking to seaside theme) on how to build a sandcastle . We remembered to use dynamic ‘bossy ‘ at the start of our instructions and the illustrations to accompany the instructions were great . We also applied our understanding of instructions when made ‘Gruffalo Crumble’ linking to Donaldson day .

The sound this week in phonics has been ‘ear’ .

Maths

Our Maths focus this week has been on Data Handling . On Tuesday we were given some images to sort on a Venn Diagram and considered some ways to sort the information. Once established the pictures could be sorted into items you find in a garden / on the beach , we were all able to sort the information confidently / correctly . Well done!! On Thursday we revisited pictograms and produced pictograms on favourite ice cream flavours . We followed the keys given and some of us were even  challenged further  with  1 ice cream representing 2 people ! Therefore we worked out that 1 person was half an ice cream .

Topic

It was lovely to hear about seaside holidays in the past ! This week we visited the Victorian Era with the aid of the Magic Grandad to series. We learnt about bathing machines , swimming / bathing costumes and how it was perceived as rude ( especially for women ) if skin was exposed ! We also learnt that children would have played with metal buckets and spades ( which would have rusted ) , Punch and Judy and that there was no such thing as sun cream ! Therefore items such as parasols were used as protection from the sun . On Thursday afternoon we made our own sandcastles using sand and tubes . Don’t they look great ?

PSHCE

We have continued to learn about road safety and created some road safety posters .

Donaldson Day

We really enjoyed leaning about Julia Donaldson and linked the story of ‘The Gruffalo’ to Science and in English . After learning some facts about Donaldson we read ‘The Gruffalo ‘ together . We then produced some ‘Beware ‘ posters and then considered how the Gruffalo was adapted to his woodland environment . ideas included having fur to keep him warm and orange eyes to see in the dark ! We concluded the day by analysing and following instructions to make ‘Gruffalo Crumble’.  It was delicious !

Wild Discovery

What a fantastic day we had at Wild Discovery for our end of year visit . We saw lots of interesting animals including monkeys , tortoises , deer  birds , otters , goats and reindeer .

Next Week:

Another busy week in Potter Class. This week we enjoyed role playing a visit to the seaside and using our money skills to purchase chips and ice cream at our role-play seaside café.

English / Phonics

This week we have concluded our unit on nursery rhymes and focused on ‘The Old Woman who swallowed a fly’, we really enjoyed this as not only did we have to remember the order of animals, but we found it really funny! Learners activities linked to the rhyme included a news report, colourful semantics and writing our own verse were she swallowed a different animal! As the week progressed we planned a seaside poem based on our senses linking to our role-play (see below).

In phonics we most of us have been learning about the ‘oi’ sound.

Maths

We have continued to learn about money and giving change. We consolidated our learning in a real life context when we had to purchase snacks / drinks (at differentiated levels) and check we had been given the correct change. Well done everybody!

Topic / PSD

On Thursday we took advantage of the weather and role-played the seaside!  We pretended to catch the train to the seaside and once at the seaside we went crabbing and played in the sands with our buckets and spades in the sand. We then used our money skills to buy some seaside treats. We had lots of fun!

We have also been learning about  safety at the seaside and used Barnaby Bear to support us with our learning.  We talked about the importance of keeping the beach tidy and clean and the meaning of different flags and when it is safe and unsafe to swim.

This week we have concluded our work on the Wizard of Oz. On Monday we compared the book to the film by completing a Venn Diagram ( the shoes in the original story are actually silver !) and on Tuesday we retold the story with the aid of picture whilst some of us built sentence about the plot using colourful semantics . We finished the week by creating our own tornado poems . First we watched some  tornado video clips and listened to some audios and thought about lots of adjectives to describe the sound, the damage they cause as well as considering our own thoughts and feelings . We also participated in a tornado drill like they do in some parts of the USA and hid under the table when they heard the siren ! Using the adjectives we turn created the tornado poem . Mr Byrom-Jones , Mrs Feeney and Miss Geoffroy were very impressed !!

In phonics some of us have continued to build CVC words from phase 2 whilst most of us have been identifying and writing words with the /ar/ sound . We were quite surprised how many there were .

It has been a while since we have updated this page however normal service has been resumed! Mr Byrom-Jones teaches Potter Class full time, and we are helped by Mrs Feeney, Miss Geoffroy and Mr Carter (2 days).

During the past few weeks Mr Banks has taught us Place Value  in Maths and Indian folk tales in English. With Mr Byrom-Jones we have been learning about multipication and the fantasy story ‘The Wizard of Oz’. We have also been learning about Manchester and it’s history during the topic ‘Manchester meets Mumbai’ as well as learning about the Manchester artists L.S Lowry (making our own L.S Lowry scenes) and drawing and painting some Manchester landmarks. Next week we will be focusing more on Mumbai and making comparisons between the two cities.

We had a French Day in school on Thursday 5TH May and on 12th May we had a Rosen day – in honour of the children’s author / poet Michael Rosen, who one of our primary classes are named after.

During our French day we  located France on a  map, collaged a flag , learnt the names of French colours( and participated in the party game ‘corners’ to support our learning), learnt and played boules before having a French food tasting session in the afternoon. We had lots of fun!

For Rosen Day Mr Byrom-Jones read us Rosen’s poem ‘Chocolate Cake’ before we watched him performing it. We found him to be quite funny and animated! After that we worked collaboratively to make our very own chocolate cake! In the afternoon we got to taste and we had to use lots of adjectives and create sentences about the chocolate cake with some of us using colourful semantics.  Please have a look at our photos below:

What a busy 2 weeks ! Below you can find out what we have  been learning since the 28 February.

W/C: 28th and 7th March

Phew! We have have also incorporated our own learning targets into our work . Next week we are going to look at the original version of the story and it is quite different !

We also explored graphic novels as part of World Book Day and undertook lots of activities relating to superheroes including making our own city scapes, scavenger hunts and superhero puppets.

In phonics most of us have been learning about the ch and sh sound whilst some of us having been using magnetic letters to build CVC words from phase 2 phonics .

Communication

We have been incorporating lots of communication activities in our lessons . We have really enjoyed learning the song and signs to ‘Long, long ago ‘ with the aid of signing hands ( see below ) as well learning the makaton signs of weather , linking to our Science topic .

Maths

In Maths most of us have been finding the difference between two numbers and have used concrete aids such as unified cubes and Numicon to support our learning  This week we have all been learning about money . Some of us have been counting pennies and some of us have been making different amounts to 10p and 20p using different coins . We have participated in lots of activities to support our learning , which have included the use of

computer software , bingo  and practical activities such as shop role play to support our learning .

Science

In Science we have been learning about weather . Some of us have been matching pictures to different types of weather to pictures whilst some of us have been illustrating different types of weather and using vocabulary associated with it. We have also been learning the Makaton signs for weather (see below). Why not have a try at learning these at home?

W/C: 21st February

We hope you had a lovely break.  We have welcomed  Rosie into our class next week. Here is what we have been up to this week.

English / Phonics

This week we wrote about our half term. It was lovely to hear what we have all been up to, including walks in the park. We then produced two leaflets about our roleplay experiences linking to our work ‘On the Continent’ with one leaflet about South America and the continent of Brazil and another leaflet about the African continent Kenya (see below).

In phonics most of have been learning about the ‘qu’ sound and have undertaken lots of practical activities to support our learning including our favourite sound hunt outside.

Maths

This week in Mathematics most of us have been learning about the difference between two numbers and we found this a bit tricky at first! To support our learning we decorated biscuits with two different amounts of smarties. After decorating them we had to compare the amounts and find the difference by saying how many more. Later in the week we used cubes / number lines to help us find the difference. Another group also made biscuits but had to add one each time (up to 8)

Science

We have revisited seeds and plans and discussed what they needed to grow. We then decorated our own egg shells, put cress seeds in them , soaked them  in cotton wool  and put them in a sunny place. We are looking forward to egg and cress sandwiches this week! We have also put some cress seeds in the cupboard to see if the dark has any affect.

Topic

In our topic ‘On the Continent’ we have visited Africa and Australia. For Africa we focused on Kenya and roleplayed a safari. We really enjoyed seeing all the animals on the interactive board and even got squirted by an animal (Mr Byrom-Jones with a toy elephant and a spray bottle). We then roleplayed a Kenya village and ate  rice and flatbread. We also learnt that Kenya was hot and dry.

For Australia we located it on a map and remembered that it was the smallest continent. We also had the opportunity to look at an Australian didgeridoo (it was quite difficult to play). We roleplayed the plane journey on Quantas and once in Australia we saw the Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock, and got wet again when visiting the Great Barrier Reef. We later sampled some Australian food which was fairy bread and vegemite on toast with the latter not being very popular.

PSHCE

This week has been a whole focus on ‘Speaking out to say safe’ and Dahl class recapped on appropriate and inappropriate  touching. Using resources from the NSPCC we coloured in a body map on appropriate places others can touch and inappropriate places that can’t be touched. Well done Dahl! You were all very sensible and mature.

W/C: 7th February

Another busy week in Dahl. We are certainly ready for the half term. Here is what we have been learning this week.

English / Phonics:

This week we have continued to learn about the continents of North and South America (see below) and written postcards / leaflets about our roleplay experience. Once again, some of us have use the Purple Mash software to create postcards.

In phonics we have been continuing to work on our different phases. Phase 2 have been build words with the aid of the letter sounds s a t p, whilst another group have recapped on the /z/ and /zz/ sound as well as completing a comprehension exercise based on the phonic sounds we have been learning and recapping on so far. We concluded the week with a phonics treasure hunt and once again had a go at writing the words based on the picture.

Maths:

The focus of Maths this week has been on time. Some of us have been sequencing pictures of daily events, as well as sorting different pictures into different groups relating to time, such as:

-Activities we do during the day / night

-Activities we do before school / after school

-Activities we are doing now / next.

Another group have been answering questions based on their school timetable and a fictional tv guide , as well as measuring activities they can do in a minute (e.g singing the alphabet and writing their name) and reading the time at hourly intervals.

Science:

We have continued to learn about plants. Some of enjoying exploring the tuff tray to see what was in the soil, where we found leaves, twigs, seeds and (rubber) worms! Another group have been doing some leaf printing and talking about their properties whilst another group have revisited lifecycles and illustrated the life cycle of a plant on a paper plate using actual seeds.

Topic:

During our topic work we have 'visited' the continents of North and South America. For North  America we roleplayed a visit to Florida and once in Florida we roleplayed a visit to Disney World and had breakfast with Snow White! For breakfast we had pancakes with maple syrup and they were delicious.

For South America we 'visited' Brazil'. For Brazil we learnt about the statue Christ the Redeemer  and listened to the sounds of the rainforest. We learnt that the rainforest was home to lots of plants and wildlife and that whilst it was very hot it also rained! We tried some fruit associated with Brazil. which include mango, passion fruit, papaya and coconuts. We concluded our Brazillian experience by roleplaying the carnival with the carnival masks which we made earlier on the week.

PSHCE:

This week we it has been Children's Mental Health week. We started the week off by reading a 'A huge bag of worries'. Mr Byrom-Jones modelled what it was like to carry your worries around with you all the time and that it wasn't very nice. We then thought about what our worries might look like, and after everyone made their worries into a monster (like in the story) using playdoh, we squashed our monster after sharing them. By doing this we said that talking about our worries can 'be squashed' if we share them with other people and talk about them.

On Thursday we focused on self-esteem and read the story ' The Dot'. The girl in the story did not believe in herself until her teacher told her to draw a dot. The dot  and the experimental drawings with dots showed that Lashvi in the story needed to believe in herself as it showed imagination and creativity and thus inspiring others in the story. Mr Byrom-Jones told us all to draw a dot on their paper and to be creative by turning the dot into something else! We really enjoyed this activity with the dot being turned into different pictures such as transport, faces and flowers! We we very proud of ourselves.

Have a lovely half term.

This week we have caught up on our ‘On the Continent ‘ work and have visited two continents. Here is what we have been learning.

English / Phonics:

This week we have finished ‘Flat Stanley and the Magic Lamp. We really enjoyed the ending.  After listening to the story we wrote a book review,

We have completed lots of literacy work as part of the topic which have included leaflets and postcards. On Tuesday it was Chinese New Year so we took the opportunity to visit the continent of Asia and the country of China. After visiting and exploring China we made a leaflet using our knowledge. On Thursday we explored Antarctica and on Friday we produced leaflets, with some of us using our computing skills and the software Purple Mash to produce a postcard about our Antarctica experience! (see below)

In Phonics we have continued to work through the sounds of phase 2/ phase 3. We have continued to participate in our phonics corners game and on Thursday we participated in our sound scavenger hunt , with most of us revising the /z/ and /zz/ sound. We then wrote the words on the whiteboard.

Maths:

We have been learning about Position and Direction this week. To help us understand positional language we have participated in some dancing to help us. Songs with danced to and followed the directions to include ‘The Cha Cha Slide’, ‘Hokey Cokey’ and ‘The Pinocchio’. Activities in our differentiated groups to support our understanding of position and direction have included putting the dolly in different places when asked, putting pegs in a peg board and some of being introduced to some simple co-ordinates.

Topic:

In our topic work ‘On the Continent’ we have ‘visted’ and explored the continents on Asia and Antarctica. We looked at Asia on Google Earth and remembered that Asia was the largest continent and found other countries including india and Pakistan before concentrating on China. We used the Chinese New Year Celebrations to support us with our learning and after ‘flying’ to Beijing we looked at the Chinese landmarks of ‘The Great Wall of China’ and ‘Terracotta Army’ before ‘visiting’ a Chinese restaurant. At the restaurant some of us chose to try noodles, prawn crackers and fortune cookies. We also made tiger masks as it is the year of the tiger.

On Thursday we ‘visited’ Antarctica’ and we remembered that it was bigger than Europe and that nobody lives there. We roleplayed a boat journey to Antarctica (as there are no airports on the continent)  The  journey was wet and cold!! Once in Antarctica we saw penguins, sea lions and whales before settling down to watch the Southern Lights. We even had hot chocolate to keep us warm!

PSHCE:

In PSHCE we have been learning about wants and needs and what is essential to human life. We recapped and learnt that shelter, clothes , food  are essential , whilst computers and Lego weren’t and therefore are wants.

RE:

During RE lessons we have continued to learn about ‘Why Jesus was a good friend’. We watched some clips from the ‘Beginners Bible Animated Bible’ which were about Jesus’ Miracles. We learnt that he was a good friend by turning water into wine and feeding 5000 people with bread and fishes!

This week we have been reading ‘Flat Stanley’ and we roleplayed a visit to London and had afternoon tea with the Queen! Please see below:

English:

We started the week by listening to Mr Byrom-Jones read ‘Flat Stanley’. We all really enjoyed and all made our own playdoh models of Flat Stanley after making some sensible predictions and talking about the advantages and disadvantages of being flat. Later in the week some of us worked in their groups to write a newspaper report about Stanley catching some thieves , whilst some of us drew and wrote about an event in the story, which included being used as a kite and sliding under doors much to the envy of his brother Arthur! We concluded the week by retelling the story as a storyboard. We look forward to more Flat Stanley adventures next week.

We have also completed phonics activities in our differentiated groups.

Maths:

This week we have continued with number with some of us identifying everyday examples of number use and completing missing numbers up to 20, whilst some of us have been writing numbers in figures and words as well as writing and competing numbers to 100 on a hundred square.

Topic:

We are continuing with our topic ‘On the Continent’. We recapped on our continents song and took turns to identify Europe and England on Google Earth. We then roleplayed a journey to London and got the train from Preston to London  and ‘visited’ some London landmarks . They included: 10 Downing Street, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace. Mr Byrom-Jones played some noises to emulate how busy London is.

When we visited Buckingham Palace we met the Queen! We had to bow / curtsy to the Queen before we settled down to a traditional afternoon tea, which included cucumber sandwiches, scones (with jam and cream) and tea. We had lots of fun! Next week we are going to visit another European country.

Science:

In Science we are learning about plants. After listening to a song some of us sorted and differentiated between plants and trees  some of us made playdoh flowers and labelled it, whilst some of took photographs of  plants , trees and leaves around school.

Another busy week in Dahl. This week we have welcomed a new member of our class , Ruairi.

English

This week we have continued with letter writing. We started the week off by recapping on the features before writing a letter to our friend about our weekend.  On Tuesday we imagined we were living in 1666 and thought about how we would have felt if we had been involved in The Great Fire of London. We thought about lots of adjectives to describe how we would have felt if our home / business had been destroyed, with examples being 'sad', 'worried'  and 'angry'. We then devised a letter to King Charles expressing our feelings and that the new buildings should be made out of brick and stone and not built close together. We all did a good job and made the letters look old by staining them with tea!

We have also followed instructions to do some baking as well as participating in phonic games.

Maths

We have been learning about money this week and have had  lots of fun. Some of us started the week by identifying different coins whilst some of us have been counting pennies to given amounts. All activities have been practical which included counting the pennies in the piggy bank , playing shop and buying items in Dahl Cafe.

Topic

We have continued to learn about 'The Great Fire of London' and supported our learning by watching The Magic Grandad series. We also recapped on how the fire started and made bread from the time as well as using playdoh to make traditional food which we find in a bakery today. Most of us liked the bread although it was a bit salty!

RE

In RE we have continued to learn about the Christmas story and thought about the gifts Jesus' received and thought about the presents a Christian baby would have nowadays.

PSHCE

During PSHCE we recapped on the importance of telling an adult when we have a problem. We started off the lesson by asking our peers if we had permission to touch each other when we participated in our peer pizza massage. We found it really relaxing!  We then talked about that it is ok to say no when something makes us feel uncomfortable and that our bodies are our own. We supported this by watching the animation 'Pantasaurus' before designing our own

We have also talked about staying safe online and have practicing 'Step back into Christmas'

English

This week we started off by writing letter from the Fox in the Gingerbread Men , aplologising to the old man and lady for eating him up! Mr Byrom-Jones modelled an example on the board and we used this structure later on in the week to write our letters to Santa  after we had written out Christmas wish list . When writing our letters to Santa we were encouraged to use the connective ‘because ‘ with most of us staring that we had been good  because we had been helping our families at home. We hope to post next week.

Maths

Our focus this week has been on sharing / diving . This week we have been dividing / sharing quantities between two , with examples being sharing the fish between the 2 x fishbowls and sharing the toppings on pizzas ! Another group have been counting and finding half of different amounts . We concluded the week by making our own pizzas  by sharing the toppings  . They were very tasty !!!

Science

This week we recapped on materials , their origins and their properties before undertaking a science investigation - to see which material was the best for a waterproof welly . Prior to the activity we designed our own Wellington boots before testing different materials to see which were waterproof. The materials we tested were paper , plastic , rubber  and fabric . We found out that plastic and rubber were waterproof, with some of us being introduced to the terms permeable and impermeable .

Topic

We have continued to learn about The Great Fire of London and finished our houses out of clay ( even though at the time they were made of wood). We emulated the fire by using tea lights. For our classroom display we also did some marbling in topic to create the fire back drop and made some houses out  of lolly sticks. They look impressive!

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely half term. Here is what we have been learning during our first week back.

English:

Most of our learning this week has centred around the Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night , however on Monday we wrote and shared our holiday news. It was lovely to hear what we had been up to and what we dressed up as for Halloween. On Tuesday we watched an animation about 'The Gunpowder Plot' and produced a wanted poster for Guy Fawkes. We learnt that Guy Fawkes and his friends were planning to commit treason, which was a serious crime against a monarch. We then retold the story as a storyboard and on Thursday we produced some informative firework safety posters. Prior to the poster making we discussed some ideas relating to bonfire safety, which included

- Stay well back from bonfires

-Wear gloves if holding sparklers

- Don't play with fireworks

-Keep pets indoors.

We concluded the week by roleplaying a bonfire. We put on our coats , drank hot chocolate and tasted parkin and treacle toffee, as well as holding our (edible) sparklers, watched the fireworks on the whiteboard and made firework noises by standing on bubble wrap. We then used the roleplay to write a bonfire poem using our senses with some of us using a simile! Well done everybody!

Maths:

This week in Maths we have been learning about ordinal and cardinal numbers. Some of us started the week by identifying and completing a pattern in the order given, before identifying different positions , whilst some of have followed instructions which included 'colouring in the first , 4th, 7th etc'. Another group have played games such as tenpin bowling and Snakes and Ladders to develop their understanding of ordinal language.

We concluded the week with some bonfire themed addition.

Topic:

This week we have linked our history focus ' Events beyond Living Memory'  to The Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire night. Throughout the duration of the week we have produced  some fantastic bonfire pictures using the natural materials of twigs and leaves for the bonfire and dish brush marks  for the fireworks, as well as making edible sparklers and firework biscuits. We have also made our own rockets with film cannisters, water and fizzy tablets! we had lots of fun.

We have also learnt the Makaton signs for 'bonfire', 'bonfire night', 'fireworks' and 'Guy Fawkes'.

Science:

The focus on Science this half term is 'Everyday Materials'. We started off the week by naming some everyday materials before considering were they came from. We found out (and remembered) that paper came from trees,  glass comes from sand ,metal came from rock and plastic from oil! We then produced a sorting activity before trying to identify some different materials around school.

English:

This week in English we have been reading Roald Dahl's 'George's Marvelous Medicine' . We started off by listening to Mr Byrom-Jones read the story and we wrote character descriptions for George and his Grandma. We found out that Grandma wasn't very nice to George and was quite scary! Later on we roleplayed the different ingredients which went into the saucepan before writing the recipe. Some of us had to choose pictures from what we remembered and some of us had to write the recipe with bossy words! We concluded the weak by thinking of ingredients for our own medicines before watching the Jackanory version of the story! Most of said our favourite Roald Dahl story this half term is 'The BFG' and 'The Twits'.

Maths:

This week in Maths we have been learning about measure - with a Halloween focus! We started off the week by making playdough witch noses and using comparative language to order and compare them. We concluded the week with some of us ordering  pictures of witch lengths and some of us identifying the smallest and biggest Halloween icons.

History:

On Tuesday we celebrated 'Black History Month' in school. In Dahl Class we found out how black people have been treated differently because of their skin colour before learning about a famous woman called Rosa Parks. In America in the 1950s black people had to give up their seat on a bus for white people, until one day Rosa Parks refused! Rosa was arrested but she changed the course of history forever, which eventually put a stop to the segregation on buses.  We also listened to an African version of Rapunzel, made an African inspired Rapunzel peg doll, listened to reggae music  and made African masks!

Communication :

In Communication we have been learning the Makaton signs for Halloween and applied our learning to a Halloween corners game.

English:

This week our Roald Dahl story has been the 'BFG' . We started off the week by using the description from the text to draw The BFG. The staff were all very impressed how the illustrations had similarities to Quentin Blake's. After reading more of the story and watching extracts from the film, we drew (and wrote about) our own happy dreams in a jar, just like the BFG had in a story. The dreams ranged from families, friends and favorite toys. We concluded the week by creating our own dream jar / sensory bottles and labelled them.

Maths:

This week we have been learning all about 2D Shapes. Some of us have been making repeating patterns using 2D Shapes, some of us have been making 2D Shapes and some of us have been recognising 2D shapes based on their properties.

UPDATE IN DAHL

What a busy few weeks in Dahl! The weekly updates will resume from next week so you can see what your child has been learning. However below you will find an update on recent learning activities (see photos below).

English

After reading ‘’The Enormous Crocodile’ we moved on to the ‘Twits’. We found out they were unlikeable characters and thought of lots of adjectives to describe them.  Both of them were quite gross and we enjoyed participating in a sensory activity were we made Mr Twit’s beard and put lots of items in his beard (e.g cheese / biscuits / sweets). We then thought and wrote about another practical joke Mr and Mrs Twit would play on each other! We concluded the week by making some posters about animal cruelty (as Mr and Mrs Twit kept monkeys in cages and would catch birds to eat them in a pie) and reading to the end were justice was served after the animals got their own back on them…

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about addition and subtraction. Some of have been adding and subtracting one and have completed lots of practical activities to support our learning, which have including giving the monster one more eye, adding one more smartie to the biscuit  as well as incorporating our fine motor skills to count and build towers and threading beads, before subtracting one. Some of us having been working with numbers up to 20 and have enjoyed lots of activities to support our learning , by using dies to make our own number operations and colour by number operations.  We have been using our numberline to help us with our learning.

Topic

Our topic continues to be the Geography focus of ‘My Town and Me’. Last week we designed our own town as a map and became familiar with some images we could use in our key to inform our map. We all did a fantastic job and Mr Byrom-Jones and Mrs Feeney were very impressed with our efforts and achievements.

This week we enjoyed participating in a junk model activity to create a model town. Prior to the activity we thought carefully of what we found in our own town and what we would like to make. We had lots of fantastic ideas and models, ranging from a hospital, school,  café , supermarket and apartment block.  We have also enjoyed playing with the town.

Science

In Science we have concluded our work on senses before learning about different animals and the category they belong in. We found out that mammals give birth to babies and have hair – this also applies to whales and dolphins. We made our own playdoh animals before sorting them into the correct group in which they belong in.  Well done everybody!!

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a lovely summer. In Dahl class our staff are Mr Byrom-Jones, Mrs Feeney and Mr Carter. We are also helped by other adults too. Mr Byrom Jones teaches us for Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Topic, PSHCE and RE , whilst we have Miss Bell for PE, Mr Mahmood for Computing, Mr Banks for Music and Communication and Miss McLaughlin for Phonics and Motor Skills.

Here is what we have been learning:

English (2nd – 17th September)

This half term we are reading stories by Roald Dahl. So far, we have listened to his autobiography ‘Boy’ and ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. After learning about the author, we then used ‘Boy’ as a basis to write our own autobiographies (linking to our topic ‘’My Town and Me’). We have really enjoyed the story of ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ and using the text we have written wanted posters, crocodile fact files, menus and written another scene for the story were the crocodile is disguised as something else! (Examples have included the crocodile being disguised as a bed, rollercoaster ride , bed and army tank!) . It is Roald Dahl day in primary on Friday and we are looking forward to learning all about Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’.

Numeracy (2nd – 17th September)

In Numeracy we have been learning about numbers, counting and place value. We have played lots of number games to support us with our learning, with examples being ‘Play your Cards Right’, Tin can Alley and Bingo. Some of then have been ordering numbers and counting on whilst some of us have been partitioning two digit and three digit numbers into hundreds , tens and ones.

Science (2nd – 17th September)

In Science we are learning about ‘Animals and Humans’ and have been focusing on the five senses. To support our learning we firstly drew a self portrait and labelled the necessary features associated with each sense, before participating in sound lotto which we really enjoyed. We have also participated in a carousel of activities to support our understanding of our senses, with activities being guess the sound, guess the scent and a feely box. We had lots of fun.

Topic (2nd – 17th)

Our topic is ‘My Town and Me’. Firstly we focused on us an individuals and  made self portraits using buttons and are very own self portrait grass heads! We have also discussed the features of a town , our own homes and houses and how each home and family is special and unique.  Recently we have created a plan our classroom which will be used to help us design and map our own imaginary towns in the coming weeks.

Another busy week in Maple. This week we have been learning about minibeasts and transitioned into our new classes on Thursday. Here is what we have been up to:

English

This week in English we have enjoyed writing and sharing our weekend news as well as working on our individual targets.  Some of us having been changing the root verbs by adding the suffixes of ing, ed and er whilst some of us having been applying our phonic skills and working on our presentation.

Linking to our work on minibeasts we read  ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carl. After reading the story some of retold the story by writing a sentence next to each picture whilst some of wrote from the perspective of the caterpillar by using time connective, adjectives and punctuation!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning all about data. We started the week off by collectively making a tally chart on favourite sports in Maple, before using the information to make a pictogram. Some of us have tried really hard to count in 2s when one symbol represented two people. We also went on a bug hunt around school (see topic) , completed a tally and used the information to make pictograms. We concluded the week by sorting pictures of minibeasts on to differentiated Carroll Diagrams. Mr Byrom-Jones, Mrs Carter and Mrs Suffield were all very impressed!

Topic

This week we have been learning all about minibeasts. Mr Byrom-Jones started the lesson by asking us to name different types of insects. Mr Byrom-Jones then explained to us that not all bugs are insects and that to be an insect they need to have 6 legs and 3 body parts (head, thorax and abdomen).  We then made playdoh insects before labelling them.  We also enjoyed exploring the school environment by looking for different minibeasts and recording our findings.

In other areas of the curriculum:

RE - We have learnt about the Hindu story of Rama and Sita and how good always wins against evil.

This week we have concluded our work on Knights and Castles which we have really enjoyed. Here is what we have been up to:

English

We started off the week by acting out our own knight stories which we had written last week. We really enjoyed playing a character from our stories, which included knights, dragons, trolls and princesses!  On Tuesday we wrote an account about the day in the life of a medieval knight. After recapping on the role of the knight and their diets we then wrote an account. Most of us used some adjectives in our work to enhance the description of the characters, including ‘shiny armour’ and  ‘fierce dragon’, and some of us remembered to use time connectives . They were great and Mr Byrom-Jones, Mrs Carter and Mrs Suffield were very pleased. We concluded our topic with a medieval feast and prior to this we produced a menu for it. We found out that medieval food was quite different to modern day, with examples of medieval food including swans and peacocks! When writing our menus some of us had to differentiate between modern day and medieval food, whilst some of us once again used adjectives to enhance the description e.g. ‘Delicious Deer’. We have also been working on our individual targets and our phonic skills.

Maths

This week in Maths we have been learning about time. At the start of the week Mr Byron-Jones did a mini assessment to check our understanding and confidence, with one group focusing on o’clock and the other group o’clock and half past. As the week has progressed we have all made progress as one group now is purely focusing on half past and another group have measured time and read the time at quarterly hour intervals. Activities to support our learning have included board games, matching games, bingo and making clock biscuits.

Topic

We started off the week by finishing off our shields, swords and helmets (for hose who hadn’t) whilst some of us made some castles out of Lego. On Tuesday we talked about weaponry used in medieval times and made some catapults out of lolly sticks before firing pompoms into the model, which we had built together in class. Later on in the week we linked our work on knights to a fantasy element by making dragon eyes from salt dough, before having a medieval feast to conclude the topic. Prior to the feast (were we were able to eat bread, cheese, meats, fruit and pies) we took part in jousting using the armour we had made. We had lots of fun.

Science

This week in science we have continued to learn about healthy eating and started of the lesson by recapping on what is needed in a healthy meal, using the eat well plate. We were then presented with a challenge! A medieval knight time travelled from Medieval England and wanted to try some modern foods, but he was concerned about the fat content in the food. Therefore we had to test the content in different foods by rubbing them on a brown paper for 20 seconds. The foods we investigated were:

-Sausage Rolls

-Apple

-Bread

-Chocolate

-Crisp

-Mayonnaise.

The fat content was indicated by leaving a translucent stain and we were al surprised to discover how much fat was in mayonnaise. We concluded the session by talking about why fat is important in our bodies, as it keeps us warm and protects our organs, but we should only have it in moderation.

In other aspects of the Curriculum:

RE – in RE we listened to the story of ‘Jonah and the Whale’ and learnt about disobedience and saying sorry.

PE – In PE we have participated in an obstacle course and yoga with Mr Niven.

Music – With Mrs Carter we have written lyrics to music.

This week we have been continuing with our topic of 'Knights and Castles'. Here is what we have been up to:

English

This week in English we started off the week by retelling the story of 'King Arthur'. We all had a good understanding of the story, with some of us using the pictures to help us to write our sentences and some of us incorporating adjectives into our work.  Later on in the week we chose pictures to plan our own knight story, with  examples of pictures including a knight, dragon, troll, princess , treasure and a happily ever after. We also chose different pictures to plan our own stories and they were great when we read our plans back using the pictures. On Thursday we wrote our own stories using the plans and they were great! We all tried really hard to use narrative language with some of us incorporating some fantastic description to describe the characters. Next week we are going to perform them.

Maths

Our Maths focus this week has been on fractions. When Mr Byrom-Jones asked us what fractions were we were unsure, however this week we have completed lots of practical activities to support our learning which have included making a fish scene (by cutting circles into different fractions) , cutting different shapes, board games and sharing spots on the ladybirds and toppings on ice cream.

Topic

We have continued to learn about Knights and Castles. On Wednesday we produced some fantastic artwork in the style of Paul Klee's 'Castle in the Sun'. We looked at the different 2D shapes Klee had used in his 'Castle in the Sun', before selecting 2D shapes to create our own pictures before colouring them in with wax crayons. Don't they look great.

We have also looked at the features of a castle before labelling it and on Thursday we painted  and decorated our own knight swords and helmets , as well as painting our own coat of arms shield which we had designed the previous week. We are now ready for battle...

RE

This week in RE we have been learning about the parable of 'The Good Samaritan'. We watched an animation , produced some drama and played 'The Good Samaritan' board game.  From the story we learnt that we should not judge other people when we do not know them and we should be kind to everybody.

This week we have also made some lovely Fathers Day  cards and talked about 'How everyone is awesome' by recognising different family structures . We concluded the session by reading a story called 'Part of the Party' and contributing to a primary display by making handprints for a rainbow.

In other areas of the Curriculum:

PE - Yoga with Mr Niven

PSHCE - We have continued to learn about feelings and how our facial expressions and body language can convey feelings and emotions.

W/C: 7th June

Welcome back after the half term break. This week and next week our new topic is ‘Knights and Castles’. Here is what we have been learning.

English

We started off the week by writing and sharing our holiday news. It was lovely to hear what everyone had been up to, to visits to the seaside and visits to park.  We then used our knowledge from Monday’s topic lesson to write a job advert for a knight. We all tried really hard to think of the qualities a knight may need , with adjectives being  ‘brave’, ‘strong ‘ and ‘loyal’. Some of us also used bullet points in our work.

Later in the week we started to read the legendary story of King Arthur  before writing character descriptions for Merlin  and Arthur, making posters advertising the pulling of the sword , and revisiting the features of newspapers to write a news report about Arthur pulling the sword from the stone and becoming King. We concluded the week by watching Disney’s ‘The Sword in the Stone’.

Maths.

This week in Maths we have been learning about doubling and multiplication.  Some of us started the week by rolling different dice and doubling the numbers on them. Other activities this week have including doubling the eyes on a monster , doubling bingo and doubling the number of smarties on the biscuits.  Another group have been solving multiplication problems by using arrays.

Topic

This week in topic we have been learning about the Medievael times , with a particular focus on Knights and Castles. We started off the week by learning about the role of the knight , their armour and their coats of arms. We learnt that a coat of arms was used to  identify individual knights and we had a go at designing our own (we will make them earlier next week).  We have also made our own knight pictures and used tin foil, washers and feathers to make our own armour . Don’t they look good?

Science

In Science we have been learning about what a knight might eat to stay healthy, and the importance of a balanced diet. After learning that we need a large proportion of fruit / vegetables and grains / carbohydrates  in our diets we then made a balanced meal from playdoh. Examples of foods included :  Fish, rice and vegetables,  jacket potatoes with beans and salads and pasta dishes. Next week we will investigate the fat content in foods.

RE

This half term the focus is ‘What can we learn from stories?’. This week we have listened to the parable of the ‘Wise Man and Foolish Men’  and watched a short animation. After listening to the story we thought about why the foolish man was foolish with examples being that he did not listen to advice and rushed his work. We talked about how this could apply to modern day and in the classroom day. To support our learning we made Lego houses and put them on a rock and then on sand, before pouring water on them. Like the parable, the house on the sand broke and washed away.

PE

The focus on PE this half term is Yoga and undertook some Cosmic Yoga activities with Mr Niven.  We also enjoyed swimming at Leyland Leisure Centre.

Music

We have been learning about rhythm and  pulse with Mrs Carter.

PSCHCE

We have been learning about feelings and emotion and participated in an emotion bingo game .

The last week before our half term break . We have welcomed Mrs Suffield to Maple Class.  Here is what we have been up too :

English

This week in English we have concluded our work on non chronological reports by linking it to our science work on the circulatory system . During the report we gave an introduction to the circulatory system and used subheading to explain the different functions . We also remembered to use photographs / pictures to make it more interesting for the readers. Prior to this we role played the circularly system to system to support our learning and had lots of fun ( see below ) .

We have also continued to learn about the story of Moses ( linking to both Topic / RE ) and retold the story as a storyboard . We concluded the week by writing a diary entry from the perspective of Howard Carter .  Some of  us used colourful semantics to help us with our sentences, whilst some of us  tried really hard to use time connectives  as well as adjectives and exclamation marks to make our work more interesting .

Maths

This week in Maths we have revisited 3D Shapes and their properties . During the course of the week some of us have been investigating which 3D shapes stack, slide and roll as well as undertaking some sorting activities , whilst some of us have have been building 3D Shapes and finding and matching 3D Shapes based on their properties . We have also undertaken some work on position and direction and used coordinates to make an Egyptian map.

Topic / Science

In topic we have concluded our learning on the Ancient Egyptians . At the start of the week we made our own canopic jars and playdoh organs to go inside the jars . We then decorated Egyptian collars in preparation for our Egyptian banquet on Thursday . We enjoyed dressing up and trying foods from the time , including  figs , dates , cucumber , bread , cheese and honey !

In Science we looked at the mummified apple piece and compared it to the apple left to decompose . We found out that the left to decompose had become mouldy whereas the mummified apple hadn’t. We have also continued to learn about the circulatory system and role played it using a pump for the heart ,  play tunnels  for veins and arteries, raspberries for red blood cells and purple grapes for the deoxygenated blood / waste .

In other areas of the curriculum :

PE - Completed some circuits with Mrs Stewart.

English

This week in English we concluded the story of ‘ Cinderella of the Nile ‘ by participating in a drama activity  and prior to the activity Mr Byrom-Jones , Mrs Carter and Mr Niven were really impressed that we could  remember the characters and events .

This week we have also been learning about non chronological reports . After establishing that they were about facts , we then put back together a non chronological report Mr Byrom-Jones made about dogs before analysing and identifying the features of non chronological reports which included headings, photographs , introduction , sub headings and bullet points . Later on  in the week we consolidated our knowledge further of non chronological reports by creating our own on an area of personal interest ( ranging from snakes , cars and Emmerdale ) as well as writing a non chronological report on the Ancient Egyptians.

Maths

This week we have consolidated our  learning on money . This week some of us have been counting in 2s using 2ps before adding pennies to the totals ( up to 5), some of us having been using different coins to total to 20p and some of us have been making amounts  to £1 using  different amounts as well as beginning to give change . Activities to support learning have included playing shop , magnetic fishing and differentiated money games on the iPads and computers.

Topic/ Science

In our topic lessons we have continued to learn about the Ancient Egyptians and the mummification process . On Monday we had lots of fun pretending to be mummies ( taking turns to wrap each other up) after listening to a mummification song from ‘Horrible Histories ( they were gruesome !). We them applied our literacy knowledge and wrote / sequenced instructions about the mummification process and remembering to use our bossy verbs .

Later on in the week we made our own Ancient Egyptian tombs after mummifying an action figure , peg doll and decorating a cardboard sarcophagus .

In Science we have mummified an apple ! After looking and using our senses it describe half an apple,  we then covered it in a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and salt . Next week we will compare the mummified apple half to the one that was left to decompose !

In other areas of the Curriculum

In RE - we have been learning about the story of Moses and the festival of Passover which links to our work on Judaism and our upcoming work on the sedar plate .

W/C: 10th May

Here is what we have been learning this week:

English

We started off the week by using stick puppets to retell the traditional story of Cinderella. Mr Byrom-Jones told us that fairy tales such as Cinderella were originally for an older audience and were quite dark and gruesome (In the early versions of Cinderella the ugly sisters cut off their toes and heel to try on the glass slipper before having their eyes pecked out!) . After performing the story, we then retold the story in our own words. Later on in the week we read an Egyptian version of Cinderella (linking to our topic)  ‘Cinderella of the Nile’ , and after learning that the character of Rhodopis was stolen by pirates and sold to an Egyptian , we wrote character descriptions and thought about adjectives to describe the character, with adjectives ranging from ‘sad,’ ‘pretty’ and ‘exhausted!’. After listening to the story, we then used a Venn Diagram to compare the traditional version and the Egyptian version.

Maths

This week we have been learning about money. During the week some of us have been counting pennies to 10p, some of us have been recognising and adding coins to 20p and some of us have been totalling coins above £1. During the course of the week we have participated in lots of fun and practical activities which have included board games and money games on the iPad. However, our favourites have been finding coins in the sand and totalling them, as well as participating in Maple Café at the end of week, were we had to pay for specific items using the monies we had been working on.

Topic

Our topic for the next few weeks is the Ancient Egyptians. We are really interested in this topic and we started off the week by being archaeologists and finding Egyptian artefacts in the sand. Items found in the sand included papyrus (Egyptian paper), a sarcophagus, mummy, death mask and canopic jars. After discussing each one in turn we then used the Ancient Egyptian writing system of hieroglyphics to write our own names on papyrus paper.

Later in the week we learnt about the explorer Howard Carter who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb nearly 100 years ago. We roleplayed Howard Carter’s discovery and found some treasure in the tomb (chocolate coins) as well as the death mask.  We then listened to some Ancient Egyptian music and coloured and painted our own death masks (inspired by Tutankhamun’s) ready for display.

Science

In Science we have been learning about the circulatory system. To support our learning we watched an episode of ‘The Magic School Bus’ and learnt about the heart pumping our blood around are body, as well as learning about the arteries and veins. To help us understand this concept we decorated a gingerbread man with icing pens, highlighting the heart, arteries and veins.

RE

We have been continuing to learn about Judaism and this week we have been learning about a mezuzah. A mezuzah is a scroll inside a decorative case and is placed on the door frame in Jewish homes, with Jewish individuals touching or kissing them when passing to show their respect to God. After learning about the mezuzah we then wrote a special prayer (which Mr Byrom-Jones translated to Hebrew) and placed in inside our decorative cases, before placing them around our classroom door.

In other areas of the curriculum

In PSHCE we have been learning about personal safety and safety in the home

ICT we have been learning about online safety and the importance of not sharing personal information and reporting anything we don’t like to a trusted adult.

PE – In PE we have been participating in Just Dance activities, cheerleading and some outdoor fames.

Music – In Music we have continuing to develop our singing skills as well as getting more confident with the glockenspiel.  We are getting ready to perform….

Another short week . We hope you enjoyed the bank holiday . Here is what we have been up to:

English

We started the week by using drama to retell the story of Peach Boy and we had some fantastic acting in Maple Class . We then used the drama to help us to retell the story as a storyboard which also incorporated our individual writing targets.

On Friday we created an informative travel leaflet on Japan after we roleplayed the visit in the morning . During the visit we role played the airplane journey and once in Japan we went to a sushi restaurant ( we had to sit on the floor as this is a Japanese custom ) tasted sushi if we wanted too, saw the landmark Mount Fuji and watched a sumo fight . We had to pay for items using the Japanese currency Yen and used our knowledge of Japanese phrases such as Konnichiwa (Hello) ,  Hai (Yes) and Iie (No). After this we applied and consolidated our learning by making a travel guide to Japan.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about subtraction and had to remember to subtract the smaller number from the bigger number . Some of us have enjoyed practical games such as ten pin bowling whilst some of us have been writing our own subtraction number sentences using dice ( one group using a 20 sided dice and one using 100 sided !)! and have used number lines/ hundred square to help solve the  calculations.

Topic / Science

We have continued to learn about Japan and in science we were presented with a challenge - a Japanese Emperor wanted us to investigate which materials would be the best insulator for a kimono . After exploring different materials we thought about were the materials came from and found out that:

Silk comes from a silk worm

Wool comes from a sheep ( most of us knew this )

Cotton comes from a plant

Fleece comes from recycled plastic !

We then undertook the investigation (with some of us reading the thermometers) and found out that wool would make the best material for a kimono to keep the Emperor  warm . We also made some sushi out of playdoh .

Later in the week we found out that Japan was prone to earthquakes because it was on a fault line . After learning why earthquakes happen , particularly in Japan , we role played an earthquake drill before making some towers from Lego, wooden blocks and magnetic shapes . Once the buildings had been made we emulated an earthquake by shaking the trays which the towers were on. Whilst we had fun , we thought about how serious lives in Japan are affected and like the Lego tower, we discovered that buildings are well built and high up to protect them from both earthquakes and tsunamis.

RE:

In RE we have continued to learn about Judaism and consolidated our knowledge of a Bar/ Bar Mitzvah by re-enacting both the service and the celebration afterwards . During the service boys and girls had to sit separately in the synagogue, with the boys wearing their kippahs. We then took turns to ‘read’ from the Torah before congratulating each other . After the service we exchanged Bar / Bat Mitzvah cards and played some traditional party and Bar / Bat Mitzvah celebratory games such as musical chairs and musical statues .

PE - We are continuing with cheerleading and played 'Domes and Dishes' on the playground which was lots of fun.

Music - We have continued to appreciate music from different eras, been singing and developed our confidence with the glockenspiel.

British Values - We learnt about democracy and voting. We discussed and voted for different  clubs we would be interested in for after school and sent our ideas to Mrs Padgeon.

English

This week in English we have been listening to the Japanese folk tale ‘Peach Boy’’. We learnt that a peach in Japanese culture brings luck to couples wanting a baby. We enjoyed the story and created wanted posters for the onis  (Japanese monsters) made oni masks as well as producing character descriptions and diary entries on Peach Boy. Next week we are going to be using drama to retell the story.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been learning about addition. Some of us have been writing our own addition number sentences by rolling dice as well as playing some addition games, whilst  some of us have been using a hundred square to help solve tricky calculations before recapping on partitioning and the column method .

Topic

Our topic for the next two weeks is Japan. On Monday we told Mr Niven and Mrs Carter all about our knowledge on Japan and they were quite impressed. During the course of the week we have identified Japan on a map,  coloured in the flag, decorated an origami kimono,  written our names in Japanese, as well as making Japanese fans and creating a cherry blossom tree for the classroom display.

We have also been learning some basic Japan phrases:

Hello - Konichiwa

Yes - Hai

Another busy week in Maple and we enjoyed our topic ‘Wheels and Wings’. Here is what we have been learning this week:

English

We started the week off by listening to the poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ by R.L Stevenson. After listening to the poem we discussed what the poet saw on his journey and then we were each given a passage to focus on and draw in the window of carriage, in preparation for display. The poet saw lots on his journey including ‘Houses’ and ‘Bridges’ and ‘Cattle and Horses’.  We then used this as a basis for our own poems and on Tuesday we roleplayed a train journey and used our senses to circle things we saw and heard before using this to inform our poems. The same also applied on Thursday, were we roleplayed the airplane before writing a poem. The poems were great and some of us even used similes such as ‘clouds white as sheep’ and ‘engines roaring like a lion’.

Maths

In Mathematics this week we have continued with Place Value, with some of us partitioning numbers into hundreds , tens and units, some of us ordering numbers and some of us counting and comparing two groups.

Topic / Science

This week in topic we have been learning all about the airplane. We started off the week by watching some classic clips of early attempts to fly as well as watching an animation all about the Wright brothers, who of course invented the airplane. We really admired them as they never gave up! After watching the animation we then sequenced an aviation timeline and made airplanes out of lollipop sticks  for a display with cotton wool for the sky (see below). In our Science lesson we used and tested different materials which made the best airplane.  We talked about the different forces on the plane (ourselves and the wind being the push and gravity being the pull) The materials we used were paper, card, tissue paper, grease proof paper and photo paper. Our results found that paper was the better material after all with tissue paper being too light and photo paper being too heavy. We concluded the week by making and decorating our own gliders and we had lots of fun.

RE

We have continued to learn about Judaism and Bar Mitzvah’s and to support our learning we made our own Kippahs.

Music

In Music we have been listening to and appraising a disco song, singing and playing the glockenspiels with Mrs Carter.

PE

In PE we have been continuing to learn a cheerleading routine as well as participating in team games.

St George’s Day.

On Friday 23rd April it was St George’s Day. We celebrated it in Maple class by roleplaying the story and making our own dragons out of playdoh. We also decorated a biscuit with the St George’s Flag.

We hope you have had a lovely Easter Break . We have had a fun and busy week in school and we are really pleased to have Mr Niven back in class. Here is what we have been learning this week.

English

We started the week off by writing about our Easter holidays. It was lovely to hear stories of Easter Egg hunts and lots  of walking.  On Tuesday we started our class story ‘The Wind in the Willows’ with a focus  on the character of Mr Toad. After listening to the story we thought of lots of adjectives to describe Mr Toad , before putting them in a sentence using ‘because’. Examples of adjectives to describe Mr Toad included silly, rich, greedy and foolish! In the next lesson  we looked at  advertising,  analysed a estate agents advert before writing our own  estate agent advert for Toad Hall. Toad Hall was quite appealing with adjectives to describe it, with examples of being ‘grand’ and ‘beautiful’. Linking with our topic ‘Wheels and Wings’ we designed our own  car and advert for Mr Toad.  (with lots of adjectives).  There were some super ideas in Maple which ranged from the cars being solar powered, being able to fly , built in massage chairs and vending machines for a snack. Mr Toad would certainly have a difficult choice to pick his new car!

Maths

This week in Mathematics we have been learning about number and place value. Some of us have been ordering numbers to 10 as well as using language of one more and one less. We enjoyed lots of practical activities to support our learning, which  included one more and one less of smarties on a biscuit and one more and one less of a Lego tower. Another group have been comparing numbers and  have becoming familiar with the language of more than, less than and equals to  (to 20) and another group have been confidently using the symbols of more than , less than and equals of two given numbers to 100. This group have also been writing numbers in digits and words. We were also introduced to a 100 sided dice to help us find and comparing numbers.

Topic / Science

This week  we have been introduced to the topic of ‘Wheels and Wings’. After establishing what was the topic would be about, as well as identifying different modes of transport, we focused on the history off the motorcar. We found out that motorcars a long time ago were very expensive and powered by steam! Karl Benz  then invented the first petrol car before Henry Ford made cars quicker and cheaper.  After learning about this we produced a timeline  on the history of the motor car, labelled the parts of a modern day car, as well as making our own paper plate  cars out of paper plates.

The Science element this week has focused on forces and push and pulls. After completing a pull and push sorting activity on a Venn Diagram we then had lots of fun by painting with toy cars using a push and pull.

We concluded the week by making our own Lego cars and powering them with a balloon , with the released air from a balloon pushing the car forward. We had lots of fun.

In other aspects of the Curriculum:

RE – We have been introduced to Judaism and some Jewish artefacts such as the Torah and Kippah.

Computing – Staying safe online and keeping personal details private – with the aid of the ‘Hectors  World Series – You think you know’

Communication – We have been learning the Makaton signs for transport.

PE – We have been undertaking some Cheerleading activities with Mr Niven and in Music we have been signing and learning to play the glockenspiels with Mrs Carter.

On Friday we celebrated the life of Duke of Edinburgh – Prince Philip across the school. In Maple Class we learnt about the history of the Royal Family (the fact that the eldest boy is always next in line to throne)  and some facts about Prince Phillip (did you know he was born in Corfu and was in the Navy?) After learning about the Royal Family tree we painted and produced our own family trees as well as decorating biscuits with the Union Jack Flag.

W/C: 22nd March

This has been our final week of the Spring term and what a busy and strange term it has been .Here is what we have been learning this week :

English

This week in English we concluded the Easter Story and have written  news reports about Good Friday and Jesus’ resurrection . We then had to create a missing poster after Mr Byrom-Jones’ Faberge egg went missing ! We were later surprised to learn that Burglar Bill had stolen it !! ( after watching the CCTV Footage ). We were pleased to learn that he had been caught , especially Mr Byrom-Jones ! We then wrote a news report about the

event (which included a quote from Mr Byrom-Jones ) before listening to the story of Burglar Bill .

Maths

In Maths we concluded with subtraction ( for now) and linked our Mathematics to an Easter theme !! On Monday we had  to count , tally and graph the different colour of smartie mini eggs in a packet , before tasting different Easter chocolate eggs ( with  Aero, Rolo , Malteser and Cadbury's all being joint favourites).

Science

This week in Science we have concluded our work in life cycles and illustrated the life cycle of a butterfly using different paste shapes . Mr Byrom-Jones and Mrs Carter were very impressed with our work and using the appropriate scientific vocabulary ( egg , lava / caterpillar , Pupa / chrysalis and adult ) to label out life cycles . We also produced some beautiful, symmetrical butterfly art to support out learning .

Art

This week  we have been learning all about the artist Faberge and his Faberge Eggs. We learnt that they were made for the Russian Royal Family a long time ago , there are 57 left (with the Queen having three) and that they are worth over £20 million.  We then painted and decorated our own Faberge Eggs and don't they look great!?

In other aspects of the Curriculum

-We have made our own Easter models which depict the Easter Story.

- We made our own Easter nest cakes

- We created our Easter Egg cards using shaving foam and paint to make a marbling effect

-In Music we have been learning and playing on the glockenspiels with Mrs Carter as well as learning about British Values.

Another busy week in Maple. This week we have been learning all about Easter and the Easter Story , with Mr Byrom-Jones and Mrs Carter being impressed with all of the pupils' enthusiasm and understanding.

English / RE

This week in English we have been learning about newspapers and their features. We started off the week by sorting and making collages of the different features and terminology ( headlines , articles and photographs). We all did really well with this activity , with some of us recognizing headlines as being 'Big Print' and some of recognizing that a headline grabs the readers' attention.

After identifying the features we then used our knowledge to write news reports about events in the Easter Story. We started off by reading and watching an animation about Palm Sunday and wrote a news article about this , and on Thursday we wrote a report about Jesus' being arrested. We all listening very attentively and Arron asked a thought provoking question  'Why was he arrested when he did nothing wrong?'. In between we roleplayed the Last Supper, however prior to roleplay we made bread for the meal using Mr Byrom-Jones' bread machine! We were all very impressed with it and took turns to follow the necessary steps, before sequencing and writing the instructions for it - using 'bossy verbs'.  The Last Supper roleplay was enjoyed by all with Arron making a plausible Jesus and Ethan being a plausible Jesus.  We concluded the week by retelling the story so far and we are excited to find out what happens next....

Maths

This week we have been learning about subtraction and we found it a bit tricky at first. However we have made good progress and some of us have completed subtraction colour by numbers with an Easter theme (making beautiful Easter mosaics / pictures) and some of us have even used a 100 square to help us solve some tricky subtraction problems.

Science/ Topic

Coinciding with our Easter theme we have been learning about Life Cycles and we started off with the life cycle of a chicken (with chicks usually being a sign of Spring and new life). We all did really well with this activity, as not only did we produce some lovely art work but we  also ordered and labelled the life cycle and learnt some new words such as hatchling. Later on in the week we did our own human life cycle and used our own baby and toddler photos for it. Prior to the activity we played a game were we had to guess who the baby photo was. We had lots of fun and did not even recognize Mr Byrom-Jones

In other aspects of the Curriculum

-We have started to learn about British Values with Mrs Carter as well as learning a new song in music. We have also been playing different table top games with our peers to help develop  and re-establish relationships, as well as helping us with our turn taking skills.

Next Week:

-Conclusion of the Easter Story

-Easter crafts

-Subtraction and Data Handling

-Burglar Bill.

PSHCE / Tabletop Games

W/C: 8th March

This week it has been lovely to see everyone in Maple Class as most of us have been learning at home. We started the week off with a PSHCE / Communication were we talked about how we felt about coming back to school. It has been science week and a  majority of our work centered around the theme of Global Warming and recycling.  Here is what we have been up to:

English:

This week we started off by writing a lockdown diary. Mr Byrom-Jones modelled it to us first and we had to write about our feelings when we found out schools were closed, how we felt about learning at home / being in school part time and how we felt about returning to school. Everyone said they felt happy to be back at school.  When writing our lockdown diaries we were encouraged to use time connectives such as first, then, later etc, This was particularly useful when we had to retell the stories of ‘The Adventures of an Aluminium can’ and ‘The Adventures of a plastic bottle’.  We really enjoyed these stories and not only found out the origins of their materials (aluminium from underground and plastic from crude oil) but also found it really interesting that the aluminium can got recycled into a baseball bat and the plastic bottle was recycled into a spaceman’s fleece!) We then planned and wrote our own recycling adventures with stories including the ‘Adventures of a Paper’, ‘The Adventures of a Glass Bottle’ and  ‘The Adventures of a Rubber Tyre . The stories were great, factual and we all tried really hard to use time connectives and write from the first person.

Maths.

This week in Maths we have revisited addition. We started the week off by playing differentiated addition games with our friends before moving on to formal methods. Some of us have tried really hard to use cubes to help us solve addition problems to 10, some of us have been counting on to solve addition problems to 30 and some of us have tried really hard to solve addition problems beyond 100 using the column method. A great week back!

Science Topic

We were quite intrigued at the start of the week when Mr Byrom-Jones gave us ice cubes with polar animal inside them! We discussed how we could get the animals out before establishing that we needed warm water to melt the ice. We had lots of fun doing this activity, however Mr Byrom-Jones told us it wasn’t a good thing that the ice had melted as the animals had lost their habitats, linking to Global Warming. We then learnt what Global Warming was , learnt how we as humans contributed , before making a poster.

During science week we have been listening to the story ‘Just a Dream’ which looked at how the world may look in the future in humans do not make good choices. We learnt about the impact of overfishing and to support our understanding of this we recycled some old CDs into beautiful fish (don’t they look great). After making the fish we then had to use a magnetic fishing rod to catch our fish. After all the fish had gone from the sea we learnt that there were now less fish in the ocean and less food for humans and other sea creatures.

We also linked the study of recycling to a Mother’s Day activity and how we can reuse something all the time  - a bag for life!

Communication

We have played a number of turn taking games to settle us back into school, with activities including Jenga and ‘Pass the Bomb’, as well as learning some recycling signs.

Have a good weekend.

Here is what we have been up to this week .

English / Literacy :

This week we have concluded our work on Snow White , planned and written our own fairy tale before making predictions about the text ‘Dinosaurs and all that trash’ linking to our new topic on recycling .

On Monday we performed Snow White in class and we really enjoyed watching our performance back . We then planned and wrote our own “into the woods “ fairy-tales and  prior to the written task we chose different characters and events to help us plan our story . The stories were fantastic , with lots of an adjectives to describe the characters and the woodland setting . Then , as part of our topic on recycling we have made predictions on our new text ‘ Dinosaurs and all that rubbish ‘. We are looking forward to finding out if our predictions are correct ....

Maths :

This week we have been learning about time with some of us sequencing the day and learning about o’clock , some of us differentiating between o’ clock and half past and some of us working on quarter to and quarter past .  During the week we have participated in lots of activities to support our learning , which have included matching activities , bingo , games on the computer and icing our own clock face biscuits to show a given time .

Topic :

Our topic for the next two weeks is ‘Recycling and the environment ‘ we started the week off with a story called the Messy Magpie ‘ before completing a task by collecting rubbish from the primary yard ( it actually game from Mr Byrom-Jones as the school grounds are  litter free )On  return to class we had to decide what materials could be be recycled before sorting and putting them into the groups of metal , plastic , paper /card and food waste . In Thursday’s lesson we learnt about the devastating effect that pollution has on our own oceans , and after watching a clip from the Blue Planet , we made some beautiful oceans in a jar . However when Mr Byrom-Jones and Mrs Carter demonstrated what happens when we litter , especially on the beach , we were all very upset and quite angry when the litter ended up in our own ocean jars  and not to mention the oil from the boats !! Not only did our ocean jars look dirty but the litter had attached it self to the fish , making us realise the importance of recycling and protecting the environment and marine life . We then used the plastic bottles which we had collected , and  recycled and decorated them as model fish to promote our learning .

Communication

In Communication lessons we have taken the time to practice our nativity as well as learning some makaton Christmas signs . We consolidated our learning with games of ‘Simon Says’ and it was very difficult to get anyone out as we have become confident with the makaton signs .

Here is what we have been learning this week:

Literacy / English:

This week we concluded the story of Hansel and Gretel by retelling it before moving on to Snow White . To support our understanding of the story we made our own ‘magic mirrors ‘ and though about our own and each other’s qualities . We then wrote some character descriptions for Snow White and the Queen and on Thursday some of us wrote dictionary definitions for the names of the dwarves whilst some of us matched emojis to the names to the dwarves before writing their names .

Numeracy / Maths

Our focus this week has been 2D shape . During the course of the week we have had the opportunity to identify 3D shapes in different contexts , with some of us going on a shape hunt and some of us making our own shape people as well as building our own 3D shapes and models from magnetic blocks - even learning and referring to some of their properties . Coinciding with our topic (Info the Woods) and fairy tales in English we made our own fairy tale castles and when making them we talked the different 3D shapes used and again their properties ( don’t they look good ?) . We concluded the week with our own 3D shape cafe  and had to chose items on the menu which related to the shape.

Topic:

This has been our final week on the topic ‘Into the woods ‘ and we have really enjoined it . On Tuesday afternoon we were fortunate to visit the woodland area of Walton Park . During the visit we revisited our work on plant groupings and identified mosses and ferns , as well as photographing and collecting things we found interesting . The next lesson we learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy  and in the style of  Goldsworthy we created our own artwork using  the natural materials which we collected . We concluded the topic with our own happy ending and made our own fairy tale castles ( Also coinciding with our maths work ).

Another fun and busy week in Maple.

English/ Literacy:

This week we have been learning about the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel (linking with our new topic ‘Into the Woods’). We started the week off by making predictions (and if we knew the story we wrote what we knew) before reading up to the part where they find the gingerbread house. To support our learning we made and decorated our own gingerbread houses and used our senses to describe it and thought about how Hansel and Gretel  would have felt in the story .Our gingerbread houses were delicious! During the course of the week some of us have written Hansel and Gretel diary entries,  with us all writing our own witch’s menus. We got quite imaginative and creative and used lots of interesting adjectives to make the menu appealing for the witch.

Maths / Numeracy:

This week we have continued to develop our understanding of number, with a particular focus on number bonds. Those of who have been working on number bonds to 10 have undertaken lots of fun and practical activities (which incorporated fine motor activities) which included making number biscuits, matching toy cars to 10 , and putting them in the garage  and a matching activity. Those of us working with number bonds to 20  have participated in a fishing activity, car matching activity , sorting activity and board game. Some of us have also been continuing to solve problems by partitioning and have had a go at solving word problems and partitioning bigger numbers.

Topic:

Our topic for the next two weeks is ‘Into the Woods’. We started the week off by talking about what we find in the woods before creating our own mysterious woodland pictures. We thought of lots of adjectives to describe our pictures with words including magical, mysterious and spooky.

On Wednesday we made our own woodland fairy tale maps (which included a key) after watching clips from Goldilocks , Red Riding Hood  and of course Hansel and Gretel.  We concluded the week by learning about plants and the 4 different categories they belong to (flowering plants, conifers, ferns and mosses) , completing a sorting activity and finding examples of the plants and their groups outside (there were lots of mosses).

Communication / Get ACTIVE:

This week we have recapped on the different Makaton signs which we have learnt over the term and we have participated in just dance and played football with Mr Niven.

Anti-bullying:

This week has been anti-bullying week in school. We have recorded our own anti-bullying song / wrap and participated in a circle time activity with Mrs Carter, were we listened to some stories and thought about the recipe for friendship and made friendship bracelets / Number Bond bracelets.

This week we have been focusing on number . Some of us have been revisiting number bonds to 10, some of us to 20, whilst some of us have been partitioning to solve addition problems . We have participated in lots of fun and practical activities to support our learning , with activities including a number bond scavenger hunt , number bond bingo , games on the computer and operation number bond (linking to our topic Drs and Nurses).

Literacy /English

Our story this week has been ‘Funnybones’ we have really liked the stories (and the stories online) especially the opening . During the course of the week we have made posters and newspapers about the skeletons coming out at night , written about the day in the life of the skeletons before writing and performing our own funnybones stories with the aid of the puppet theatre. The stories were all very good !

Topic

This we we have continued with our Drs and Nurses theme and have learnt about the skeleton . We found out that the human body has 206 bones and learnt the names of some skeleton parts , which included skull , spine , pelvis and femur . We then produced some fantastic skeletons made from different types of pasta before labelling them. as well as icing gingerbread biscuits to show the skeleton structure. They look very impressive ! We have also learnt about Florence Nightingale and how she improved the hospitals before consolidating our understanding by undertaking a sorting activity .

STEM

This weeks STEM lessons coincided nicely with our topic as we investigated different materials to see which were able to absorb blood ( Red food colouring ) .

WWI Day

On Wednesday we had a WWI day in school  with a focus on the trenches . To get an idea we went under the tables and faced our enemies before hearing trench noises such as guns , rain and rats !! We learnt more about the trenches and interviewed Sergeant Niven from 1914 ( Mr Niven ) . We asked him lots of questions about life in the trenches and found out that  they were not very nice . At 11am we watched and participated in the 2 minute silence on BBC 1 before  writing a postcard from the perspective of a soldier to a loved one at home ( we even made them look old with an teabag ). In the afternoon we talked about the Christmas truce and had a game of football outside to emulate this . We concluded the day by trying some trench stew ( a vegetarian option was also available ) and we all agreed it was quite tasty.

Welcome back . We hope you have had a lovely half term.  Mrs Feeney is now helping  in Willow Class so this week we have welcomed Mr Niven .  We have also welcomed a new class member, Charlie . Here is what we have been learning:

W/C: 2nd November.

English / Literacy:

We started the week by writing our holiday news . It was lovely to hear about how we spent the holidays and  the costumes we wore for Halloween. We then read the story of 'Zog' and 'Zog and the Flying Doctors' by Julia Donaldson . During the course of the week we  have created safety posters about the mythical creatures / animals in the story , written instructions on how to make the medicine to treat Orange Fever, before concluding the week  by creating a leaflet about the symptoms and treatment of Orange Fever. We all enjoyed the stories and  have incorporated our writing targets in our work. Some of us have been continuing to develop our letter formation and incorporating finger spaces into our writing , whilst some of us have been trying really hard to identify and incorporate verbs and even adverbs !

Maths / Nuneracy:

Our focus this week has been on capacity . Once we established that capacity meant how much a container can hold , we enjoyed lots of fun activities to support our understanding . Some of us have been using the comparative language of full , nearly full , half full , nearly full and empty and to support this we have used sand and water , made lava lamps ( linking to our understanding of blood vessels) , played capacity Bingo and made our own fruit punches . The rest of us started the week by estimating how many cups could fill a container before moving on to measure in ml/l, with activities including measuring water , making lava lamps , using materials to show the measurements of different ingredients to make the Orange Fever medicine and also making fruit punch! We had lots of fun .

Topic:

Our topic for the next two weeks is Doctors and Nurses. As well as the Cross Curricular links ( Zog and capacity ) we have also thought about the equipment  a health care professional would use and have made our  own Doctor / First Aid bags  (with some of the necessary equipment inside ) and made our stethoscopes . We have also learnt about X-rays and have created own x-ray pictures . During the course of the week we have enjoyed  playing in our Doctor’s Surgery roleplay area.

Communication:

During our communication sessions we have been learning the Makaton signs for different medical equipment and language , with examples being x-ray, medicine , doctor and nurse.

We have made it to half term, after a different, fun and busy one. Here is what we have been up to this week.

Literacy / English:

This week we have read ‘Pinocchio’ and we were quite surprised at how different the story was in comparison to the film. Whilst reading the story we thought of adjectives to describe Pinocchio’s character. Adjectives included: silly, naughty, cheeky, rude and careless! We then put some of these ideas into a sentences. We also thought about the importance of telling the truth and not telling lies and we had fun completing a sorting activity and identifying some lies. The lies included Mrs Carter having an airplane and Mr Byrom-Jones being a footballer! After reading the story we wrote news reports about an event in the story, before concluding the week by watching Disney’s Pinocchio and comparing the book and film with the aid of a Venn Diagram.

We have also developed our speaking and listening skills by producing our own adverts about a new toy we have made in class (see Topic).

Numeracy:

This week we have continued to learn about money. We really enjoyed roleplaying the toyshop in class and we had to pay Mr Byrom with the correct coins of the specified price.  As well as playing shop we have also played bingo at differentiated levels and had to make a ‘money man’ using different coins before working out the totals.

Topic:

We have concluded our topic ‘Toy Story’ and have really enjoyed it. To coincide with our work on Pinocchio we have made our own stick puppets , before  performing our own puppet show for our friends (inspired with some clips from Punch and Judy) and on Tuesday we also made our own Mr Potato Heads out  of real potatoes (Did you know they originally were made out of real potatoes?!) This week we also received an email from Tommy the Toymaker asking us to help him make some new toys and an advert to promote. In class we made a football game from a shoebox, a maze and some paper airplanes.  We looked at some clips from some persuasive adverts and looked at the features before making our own about the toy. We all tried really hard to enthusiastic and use adjectives to promote our toys.

On Thursday with Mrs Carter and Mrs Feeney we had fun my making our own Halloween toy, a pom pom popper ghost.

Get Active:

Linking with our Literacy work on Pinocchio, we participated in an action song / dance called ‘The Pinocchio’. It was really catchy and we really had to think about our left and right like we did the previous week.

Communication:

During communication this week we have played a game ‘Two truths and a lie’ and we had to tell each other two things that are true about ourselves and one lie (linking to Pinocchio) .We really enjoyed this activity and learnt lots of facts about each other. In Communication we have also learnt Makaton signs for toys and supported our understanding with bingo.

Here is what we have been up to this week.

Literacy / English

This week we met Mr Byrom-Jones’ Teddy Bear called Matthew. He is over 30 years old and is very special. After we came back from looking at the library books we were shocked to find out Matthew had gone! Mr Byrom-Jones was very upset and he insisted we wrote some missing person posters. The next day Mr Byrom-Jones was informed that he had been found, but we had to write some instructions to find and recuse him on the primary yard. After we looked at the features of instructions and established we need to use verbs, we wrote the instructions with the aid of a map and he was found! We were all very happy, especially Mr Byrom-Jones. We then used our knowledge of verbs and instructions to make our own board games. We really enjoyed making them and playing them.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about money at differentiated levels.  Some of us have been counting in 1s and 2s to make different amounts to 10p; some of us have been using different coins to make different amounts to 20p and some of us having been making totals beyond £2. We have participate in lots of practical activities as well as using computer software to support our learning and  developed our understanding by buying tickets for the toy museum ( see topic ) .

Topic

This week we were introduced to a new topic called ‘Toy Story’. We started the week with a sensory activity and had to use a water pistol to find the picture of the toy behest the foam. We had lots of fun with this activity. We then had to write a sentence about our favourite toys and they ranged from balls to teddies to board games. On Tuesday we had a toy shop museum in class (the adults in class brought in toys from their childhood for the museum). We had to purchase a 10p ticket using our money skills before exploring the toys. Toys ranged from the Victorian era to modern day, with examples being the skipping ropes, ball and cups, spinning top, Mr Feeney’s toy tanks and Mr Byrom-Jones’ Action Men. We had lots of fun exploring the toys and then used or knowledge from the toy shop museum to make timelines and sort information on a Venn Diagram. We also watched 3 episodes of the Magic Granddad series to support our understanding of toys, (which showed examples of toys from the Victorian era, 1950s and 1960s) and concluded the week by watching Toy Story.

Get Active

During our Get Active lessons we have incorporated some position and direction into it by participating in the dances of the Cha Cha Slide and Hokey Cokey, with a focus on left and right. We concluded the week with Cosmic Yoga.

Communication

This week we have continued with our ‘Dear Zoo’ topic. Throughout the course of the week we have written animal riddles, read the story of ‘Elmer the Elephant’,  investigated the diets of different zoo animals, learnt about their habitats, made zoo animal sun catchers,  made animal shaped biscuits and learnt about Noah’s Ark. Phew!  Here is what we have done this week in more detail (see photos below)

Literacy / English

In our lessons this week we started off my learning about riddles with Mr Byrom-Jones writing some on the whiteboard. We had to carefully read the clues to find out what animal he had written about. We then wrote our own with our writing targets incorporated. Can you guess some of our animals from our riddles?

I am a carnivore

I eat meat

I have a mane

I have sharp teeth

I have scales

I can swim

We have also read the story of Elmer the Elephant. In the story Elmer becomes sad as he is a different colour to his elephant friends and decides to turn himself grey with juice from berries. However Elmer soon realises that his elephant friends don’t recognise him as grey and when he reveals who he is, he realises that he is loved and is special for being the elephant is. We then wrote about why Elmer was special and thought about why us as individuals are special. We produced some lovely artwork to accompany our work as well as retelling the story in our own words.

 In Numeracy / Mathematics.

This week we have been learning all about weight. Some of us used the weighing scales to find out which toy zoo animal was the heaviest / lightest , whilst some of us developed our estimating skills by considering how many cubes it would take for the toy zoo animal to balance on the scales. We developed our understanding of weight further my making our own animal shaped biscuits. We all had a go at weighing out and mixing the ingredients before Mr Cockerill baked them for us. We decorated  and ate them. They were delicious.

Topic

This week we have concluded our Dear Zoo topic. We started off the week by learning about the diets of different zoo animals and using the scientific vocabulary of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We were surprised on Monday when Mr Byrom-Jones gave us poo samples (chocolate playdoh) of different zoo animals and we had to dissect the poo to see what they had eaten! In the tiger’s poo we found out that he was a carnivore as there was traces of meat and feather in his poo, whilst we were surprised to find out that a rhino was a herbivore with traces of grass and leaves.  We then wrote a menu for the animal based on our findings.

We also learnt about the habitats of different animals with some of choosing to paint an arctic scene, desert scene and forest scene. After we had done this we were very confused when Mr Byrom-Jones gave us the wrong animal for our habitats (a polar bear in the desert!). We then used this to discuss why a certain animal is suited / adapted to a particular habitat and we said that a polar bear was suited to the Arctic because his thick fur would keep him warm and the monkey was suited to the forest as he could climb trees for food and shelter.

In topic we have also made our own Elmer inspired animal sun catchers (don’t they look great?) as well as making our own Noah’s Ark boats to complete an investigation. We had to work in teams o create a simple boat for Noah before estimating how many toy animals it could hold. We had lots of fun!

In STEM we have been learning about reflective materials and in Communication we have played turn taking games such as  ‘Hungry Hippos’  and ‘Pop up Porcupine’ as well as recapping on our animal signs to accompany the song of Noah’s Ark.

This week we have started our new topic ‘Dear Zoo’. We started off the week by reading Rod Campbell’s story ‘Dear Zoo’. We found the story really funny and enjoyed guessing which animals were behind the boxes. We supported our understanding by learning the Makaton signs of different zoo animals. We used the signs as a basis of our Communication lessons were we played games such as animal bingo, Simon Says and Guess Who.  We had lots of fun.

During our English / Literacy lessons we wrote a letter to the zoo asking for a specific animal. We were quite disappointed when we didn’t receive the animal which we wanted and like the story we wrote to the zoo to send it back. When we wrote our letters we incorporated our writing and IEP targets, with some of us extending our sentences further using because. We concluded the week by coming into class to witness some footprints on the floor! We were intrigued to find out which animal it belonged to. We completed a footprint matching activity and found out the footprints belonged to a lion! We then wrote a wanted poster about an escaped lion….. (all pretend of course).

In Numeracy / Maths we have been learning about measure. We started the week off revisiting our beanstalks (and we were impressed at how tall they had grown) before measuring them. Some of us had to use our rulers to measure the height, whilst some of us had to put the beanstalks in order of size from tallest to shortest. We continued this further by measuring giraffe necks and trunks (with some us ordering and measuring with cubes and some of us with rulers) and concluding the week by developing both our fine motor and measuring skills by making snakes.

During our topic lessons we have been really creative and have made our own animals out of the collection of leaves (don’t they look great?)  as well as painting our own zoo animal masks. We also used the IPads and computers to complete some zoo animal fact files. Here are some of the facts we found out:

  • A male giraffe is called a bull.
  • Leopards and tigers can swim.
  •  Zebras are related to horses and donkeys
  • Crocodiles like to eat young hippos.
  • Elephants flap their ears to keep cool.

During our S.T.E.M lessons we have been exploring shadows and have enjoyed making our own zoo animal shadow puppets.

In other areas of the curriculum:

  • We continue to use playdoh gym to help regulate ourselves but also to get our hands ready for any writing exercise.
  • We continue to take part in our ‘Wake up and Shake up’ and golden mile as part of our keep active lessons, and we conclude the week with some mindfulness and yoga.

Another busy week in Maple and we have enjoyed participating in lots of practical activities relating to our topic.

In Literacy / English we have been reading the traditional tale ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We started off by looking at a real turnip and using our senses to describe it (We found out that a turnip was a root vegetable). We then participated in a roleplay activity when the story was read aloud. We had lots of fun, but had more fun sponge painting our own turnips, taking into account the colour. We then wrote sentences about the turnip which incorporated our writing targets. In Wednesday’s lesson we recapped on the story and had to retell the story as a storyboard. Mr Byrom-Jones and Mrs Carter were very impressed.

In Numeracy / Maths we have continued to learn about shapes. Activities this week have been differentiated games of Connect Four, making our own 2D Shape Wanted posters referring to its properties and finally making our own 2D shape pictures.

In Communication we have enjoyed playing Jenga and taking turns to discuss our favourite  foods, animals etc.

In Topic ‘How does your garden grow?’  we reread ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and made soup. We took turns to put the ingredients in the slow cooker and discussed what part of the plant the vegetable was from. The vegetables included carrots, peas, beans, spinach, potatoes and even turnip. Those who tried it all agreed it was delicious! We also used vegetables and some fruit to explore patterns by printing. We really enjoyed this activity. Towards the end of the week we designed our own gardens (which included a key to show the representation of the symbols) before making our own shoebox gardens, as well as making fruit kebabs after reading ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’.

During our STEM lessons with Mrs Carter we have enjoyed making bug hotels and used lots of natural materials from  the environment to entice minibeasts into the habitats.

Another lovely week in Maple!

This week in Literacy we have finished reading ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We made a wanted poster about the giant with lots of describing words as well as retelling the story in our own words with our writing targets incorporated. We have also read the story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’, linking to our topic. We found out that Oliver wouldn’t eat vegetables until he found out that chips come from potatoes! In the story Oliver enjoyed exploring Granddad’s garden and trying the different vegetables which grandad grew. Some of us then wrote a postcard from Oliver’s perspective to a friend and used adjectives to describe the vegetables, whilst some of us wrote sentences about our favourite vegetables.

In Numeracy we have been learning about number and shape. In number some of us have been adding to 10, some of us to 20 and some of us to 50. Some of us even managed to partition numbers to help with our calculations.  In shape we have revisited 2D shapes, with some of us learning about pentagons. We have completed some fun activities and even made tessellating flowers out of hexagons and triangles. Don’t they look great?

In topic we found out that we can eat the whole part of a plant and completed a sorting activity. We found out that broccoli and cauliflower is the flower, celery and rhubarb are stems, peas and sweetcorn are seeds, lettuce and cabbage are leaves and carrots , radish and beetroot are roots! With Mrs Carter and Mrs Feeney we went on a minibeast hunt to see what we could find outside. We had lots of fun! Another busy week in Maple! We have certainly settled into our new school curriculum and have learnt lots of new things as well as completing some assessments.

Our new topic for the next few weeks is 'How does your garden grow?' We started off the topic by thinking about what we find in our garden, before making some beautiful collages for our class display. We then thought of some adjectives to describe our collages. We have also thought about the parts of a flower before making a pop up picture to show our learning, with our photos on! With Mrs Carter we thought about how plants grow and how a seed is planted. We not only learnt that people can plant seeds but also the wind and birds can also be responsible for seed dispersal.

In English we have been reading 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and created our own beanstalk picture with some descriptive sentences. We also thought about Jack's feelings and his mother's feelings before the growth of the beanstalk and afterwards. We recorded our ideas into think bubbles.

In Maths we have been learning about number bonds and addition and have undertaken lots of fun and practical activities, including tenpin bowling , hopscotch and games on the playground.

Homework the week:

-Could pupils bring in their own shoe boxes for Wednesday 16th September to make their own model gardens.

- Also please could pupils look at packaging to see were their fruit and vegetable comes from. Please could a note in the diary show this or even better a photograph of the packaging. The purpose of this activity is to track where our food comes from.

Welcome to Maple Class. I know things are a bit different at the moment but Maple Class have certainly settled back into school. As you may know the school is following a Recovery Curriculum with learners undertaking  thematic approach to their learning, as well as continuing with their English, Communication and Mathematical skills. Here is what we have done this week with some of our activities centred around our topic 'All about Me'.As you can see the pupils have had a good time and enjoyed their learning.

W/C: 2nd September

We started off the week by talking about our emotions and feelings. Some staff and pupils were very honest and admitted that they were quite nervous and worried about returning to school. We discussed our feelings and emotions with the aid of the picture book 'The Colour Monster'. We all did some really good listening and were able to identify the which colour monster represented each emotion, before designing our own. We also discussed about how it is OK to feel more than one emotion, as well as thinking about some strategies to help us to feel calm and happy.  We also listened to a story called 'Silly Billy' and how important it was to share any worries with another trusting person. In the story Billy shares his worries with his worry dolls and we followed this up by making our own . We really enjoyed this activity.

During our topic 'All about Me' , we have really liked making our own self portraits on a biscuit and we had to carefully select which colour icing we would use for our hair, eyes and nose. Not only did they look good but they were delicious! We continued with this theme by talking about the thoughts which make us happy. These ranged from favourite food to places , toys, friends and family. We then put our ideas into a think bubble ready for a display. In addition we also chose skin tone paper to recreate a self portrait using googly eyes and wool, thought about each others qualities and wrote them on hand templates,  made a mosaic of our own names as well as writing a brief speech bubble about ourselves. Phew! Doesn't the display look great?

In other areas of the curriculum we have completed some physical activity which has included Just Dance and the 'Golden Mile' as well as playing Bingo to help us with our number calculations.
