We have had a super last three days in Donaldson Class!
This week we have had lots of fun and enjoyed various activities, especially outside in the shady areas with the nice weather. We have been very resilient and coped so well with the scorching heat.
We have enjoyed exploring ice, splash pools and enjoying lots of things to keep us cool. We have made dens and enjoyed eating ice pops. On Wednesday, we explored shaving foam with ice cream scoops and cones and in the afternoon some of us went to afternoon tea with Mrs Padgeon and then we all joined together for our final Donaldson party before the summer!
You have all been pleasure to teach this year Donaldson Class and I look forward to seeing you all continue your journey in your new classes. I hope you all have an amazing summer.

We have had another busy, super week in Donaldson class.
In literacy we have been reading the story 'Giraffe's can't dance' and we loved learning about how Gerald could dance by the end of the story. We have completed some activities this week linking to the story including making our own giraffe collage with tissue paper and some of us made our own giraffe bodies using our arms and handprints. The rest of us wrote a sentence about the story, using the word bank to help us. In phonics this week we have used the interactive screen to access the sounds for our listening and reading skills, all groups had games that were suitable for individual levels for phase, 1/2, 3 and 4.
In maths this week we have been looking at money and how we can use this in real life contexts. We enjoyed using the coins in lots of different ways such as coin slotting in the piggy bank, to matching the coins to the purse and using coins in a real life scenario when we paid for our ice creams in class.
In topic on Monday, we finished our final STEM activity and we explored gloop and how the temperature of how hands made it melt. On Tuesday, we visited Miss Baker and Miss Bell's ice cream parlour and we bought our own ice creams. We could make requests such as flavours, scoops and if we wanted a flake or sauce. Some of us even used the correct coins for each item such as 1p for sauce, 2p for flake and 5p for a cone. We enjoyed eating these afterwards. On Wednesday in Understanding of the World we went to forest school to collect leaves for Gerald from our story, we enjoyed the page when Gerald was eating the shoots and leaves from the trees. We ate our snack outside with Gerald once we got back. On Thursday it was our 2nd and final transition day before September and we all did very well in our classes and on Friday we were all very resilient to the changes of being back in Donaldson! On Friday we enjoyed making giraffe biscuits and enjoyed our last rewards on Friday.
Have a lovely weekend ready to enjoy the last three days of school before the summer holidays!

This week in literacy we have been reading 'The Koala who could.' We learnt about how brave Kevin was by facing his fear of coming down the tree and meeting new friends, which has linked in very nicely with our first transition day of the week. We did some activities linking to our story including, decorating koala's and making their homes using wood like materials. In phonics the phase 2 group have been using their listening skills to explore various sounds and what they link to. Phase 3 have done 'sh' sound and phase 4 have done the 'lf' sound in words such as 'shelf, wolf'.
In maths this week, we have been focusing on 'measure - heights'. We have learnt about tall and short and what this looks like with our zoo animals, for example a giraffe is taller than a panda because of its tall neck. We have done activities to support our learning including measuring animals and teddies using cubes and a cut and stick activity with visual pictures of tall and short.
In topic this week, it has been heavily focused around our 'STEM' week, linking to fun and engaging science experiments. On Monday afternoon, we did two called 'Brilliant bubbles and sneaky shadows'. We learnt all about how we can make different shaped bubbles using a pipe cleaner to help us make different shapes. For the sneaky shadows activity we used a torch, a dark place and blankets. We explored the shadow with our hands and made lots of shapes. On Tuesday we focused on, music maker with bottles and confusing cans. We had to experiment if the heavy or the light can would roll the furthest. On Wednesday, we did 'plant detectives' at forest school and speedy scooters with sand timers for PE, we used different materials to see if the scooters/ bikes went quicker or slower across the surface and how it felt. Altogether, we have to complete eight activities to gain our STEM award, so we have one more activity to complete next week.
On Thursday, we had our transition days to our new classes, some of us stayed with Miss McLaughlin in Donaldson Class and the rest of us moved to Rosen to meet Mr Banks. We all enjoyed ourselves and were very resilient. On Friday, we made Koala biscuits in PSD and we had our stay and play in the afternoon, it was lovely to see many parents attend the session and learn about how lots of us communicate through play within the classroom.
Next Thursday is our 2nd and last transition day before September.
Please find attached the last homework mind map for the academic year and enjoy your weekend!

An activity we completed this week was with the stickle bricks and the small world zoo animals. We learnt about different directions the lion had to go such as, 'forwards, backwards, left and right'. Miss Mason made the maze a little tricky for us to have challenge!
In topic this week, we have been very busy: Including our school trip to the Wild Discovery Park in Preston. We were all very well behaved, used our manners to say thank you to the bus driver and we enjoyed seeing the animals and of course going to the park; it was a lovely day! On Tuesday, in topic we did sensory animals, exploring different textures and habitats such as ice, custard and kinetic sand. We enjoyed waiting for the ice to melt so the leopard could be free again. On Wednesday, we had Miss Baker teaching us and on Thursday in PSD we learnt about germs on our hands by using the green glitter to show us the germs and then we followed a washing hands routine, we learnt important facts about how to keep our hands clean and when we should wash them, such as before eating, after the toilet or playing. On Friday, it was our 'Julia Donaldson day' across the Primary classes and we celebrated this very well, including decorating our own Julia Donaldson character t-shirts by using fabric paints, making our giant characters, reading 'The smartest giant in town' story and making our own giant biscuits. In the afternoon we enjoyed our rewards! (If your child's t shirt has not come home, it is still drying at school)
Next weeks events are:
STEM week (we are completing 8 science challenges across the week for the CREST awards)

What a super first week back we've had!
This week in literacy, we have been reading the story called Dear Zoo, this book is very short and snappy and draws our attention to all the animals in the zoo. Miss Mason has been challenging us by not revealing the animals and has been giving us clues to guess the animal such as, colour, features, size, and noise. We have completed some activities around the story this week, including having real life boxes the same colours as the story. We had to put the animals in the boxes and some of us worked as a group to demonstrate our listening skills to key words to guess the animals; the boxes have been thoroughly enjoyed for the rest of the week! Later in the week, some of us did some animal collaging with patterns from different animals and the rest of us sequenced the story. In phonics this week, phase 2 group have focused on 'b' and revisiting 's, a, t, p, i, n' and phase 3 have done j,v and phase 4 have begun blends and clusters 'st' and 'nd' in reading and writing words such as nest, stem, hand, band. We have worked extremely hard this week!
In maths we have worked on our numbers, some of us have focused on ordering our numbers to 10 using flash cards and the rest of us have been grouping numbers and using the language such as '4 animals in a group'. Later in the week, some of us did some animal stamping to 10 with a 'Dear Zoo' theme and the rest of us practiced our number formation to 20.
In topic this week, we have done communication: signing our animals from the story. On Tuesday, we had a special friend come into our classroom called 'Oliver', he is Mr Byrom - Jones' tortoise and we were able to stroke, feed and give him a bath. We tried our best to use our inside voices, so we didn't scare Oliver. He even walked across the table to find the lettuce and cucumber, how brave! We loved him so much, that we didn't want him to go. On Wednesday we did Understanding of the World and PE, we linked these together by having a trails and tracks walk on the way to forest school and in the afternoon, we started our athletics and racing. Some of us did this in pairs. On Thursday in PSD, we looked at adjectives that describe the animals from our story and some of us made the faces in the mirror and used the playdough to express these. Some of us even talked about the word 'fierce' and said 'it's like when a lion roars, it's scary!' In the afternoon, we did some cutting skills with Miss Bell and on Friday we made our lion biscuits using strawberry laces for the mane. Also below are pictures of some of our IEP work and fantastic homework from over the half term holidays, well done everybody!
Have a fabulous weekend Donaldson,

Later in the week, we measured bear feet linking to our Rosen theme day.
In topic this week, we watched singing hands - minibeasts as part of our communication lesson. We signed 'ladybird and butterfly'. On Tuesday in topic we made a class scarecrow by using straw, a school jumper, gloves and a hat. We used stickers for the eyes, mouth and nose and we learnt that a scarecrow scares the birds away to stop them eating the fruit and vegetables that are growing. On Wednesday, we enjoyed moving in various ways by getting active on the primary yard. In PSD, we enjoyed making our friendship recipes, by linking our favourite sweets to attributes that make a good friend such as being, kind, sharing love and being helpful. We loved this activity and we even got extra sweets! On Friday as part of our Rosen day we read the story 'We're going on a Bear hunt' - This is a classic favourite in Donaldson class and to celebrate this story we made bear rolls, by using chocolate rolls, match makers for the legs and edible eyes for the bears 'big eyes'.

In literacy this week we have been reading 'What the ladybird heard.' We loved this book and enjoyed when the two thieves fell into the duck pond. We have done some activities around this book including, exploring our mini beast small world tray and decorating our own ladybirds. We had lots of activities linking to our story in our choosing times, including catching magnetic ladybirds using the magnetic rod and other activities.
In maths this week we have begun to look at measure. We have looked at 'big, medium and small' and some of us have touched upon 'tall and short' (which we are focusing on next week). Some activities we have done include, some of us looking at small, medium and big leaves and being able to match the correct save ladybird to the leaf. The rest of us used the cubes to measure how big each leaf were. We could say sentences such as 'the big leaf is 6 cubes, the small leaf is 3 cubes.' Later in the week, we used different sized spots to put on the ladybirds. Some of us could put these in a straight line up the ladybirds body to see how many spots the ladybird had and the rest of us made big and small spot patterns.
In topic this week we have been very busy! On Tuesday we had a lady bird picnic! We enjoyed trying different foods that looked like ladybirds such as babybel cheese, strawberry yogurts and strawberries with chocolate icing on them. We could put the spots on the strawberries and enjoyed eating these afterwards. Miss Mason is still waiting for our real ladybirds to arrive so we can have minibeast mascots in Donaldson! On Wednesday, the weather was a bit rainy for forest school, so we enjoyed trying our new sensory room and doing some 1:1 IEP focus activities and in the afternoon we enjoyed our PE lesson, trying to climb up and across ladders as part of our movement, coordination and climbing skills. On Thursday, we had a theme day across school called 'Bastille day'. We’ve had a super week in Donaldson class with lots of learning taking place!
In literacy this week we have been reading “Jack and the beanstalk.” We enjoyed the part when the giant said “Fee Fi Fo Fum” and when Jack had to chop the beanstalk down. We’ve done some activities around the story including making our own beanstalk collages, character stamping up the beanstalk and some of us wrote our own sentences about the story. In phonics this week the phase 2 group have focused on the sound ‘e’ and phase 3 group have worked on ‘ear’ and ‘er’ sound within words.
In maths this week, we have continued our consolidating counting through recognition of the number to quantity. Some activities we did are, putting the correct amount of beans in the numbered pots. Some of us worked on this to 3, 5, 10 and 15 and beyond; we were amazing! Later in the week, some us did some number stamping up the beanstalk and the rest of us used the pots again to look at grouping beans in 2’s up to 10.
In topic this week we started the week off by watching Mr Tumble tales and learning some new makaton signs for Jack and the beanstalk including “beanstalk, grow and castle.” We all tried really hard to sign these. On Tuesday in topics we worked in two groups, one group decorated their castles and the other group made their real life beanstalks using kitchen roll tubes and green paint, we loved doing this! In Understanding of the World we went to forest schools and planted our own beanstalks; we hope to see these grow in the next few weeks! In PE, we continued to look at different ways to move and we used the apparatus to climb up the beanstalk, we enjoyed climbing and jumping from the top. At the end of our lesson, we chopped them down so the giant couldn’t catch us! On Thursday with Miss Baker, in PSD we decorated our own “magic bean” using coloured paints to represent different coloured feelings such as happy, excited and sad. On Friday, we made our own beanstalk biscuits using jelly beans and in the afternoon we had our rewards groups.
Please find below the homework mind map for this week, thank you!
Have a fabulous weekend Donaldson, don’t forget it’s May Day on Monday so I will see you all on Tuesday 3rd May.

Welcome back Donaldson Class!
We have all settled back into our routines and have had a new friend join our class this week, he has had a super week and is settling into our class wonderfully.
This week in maths we have been looking at counting. Some of us have done this through our counting songs looking at 'one tomato, two tomato'. We used real life tomatoes and carrots to sing the song and place them on each number, looking at the amount going up each time. The rest of us have looked at one more and one less of a given number up to 10. Some of us found this a tricky concept at first but from the help of a number line; we began to get the hang of moving the peg the different ways for one more and less. Later in the week we did some turnip counting, some of us up to 5 and 10 and the rest of us consolidated our one more and one less using the turnips.
In literacy this week we have been reading 'The enormous turnip'. We have enjoyed reading this story, we particularly liked when the turnip popped out the ground! Some activities we have done this week have included creating our own turnip collages and writing descriptive words about the turnip, i.e. its colour and what it is. In phonics this week, phase 2 have done messy phonics looking at 'g, o' and recapping 's a t p i n' making different words with these sounds. The phase 3 group have done 'ow' and 'oi'.
In topics this week we have done some signing on Mr Tumble Tales - The enormous turnip. We signed, turnip, grow and enormous and we also did some squiggle whilst you wiggle turnip and carrot printing using paints. On Wednesday at forest schools, we went on a minibeast hunt looking at the world around us, we caught various things including, lady birds, worms and insects. We also planted some turnip seeds and watered them using the watering can. In PE we began to look at different ways of moving, i.e. running, spinning and movements on the bikes using our feet. On Thursday in PSD, we began to look at 'healthy and unhealthy foods'. Some of us used pretend food to look at which ones were healthy such as fruit and vegetables and not healthy, like crisps, cookies, and pizza. The rest of us used picture flash cards to record this information. On Friday, we enjoyed decorating our garden biscuits using crushed oreos for soil and green icing pens for the grass and in the afternoon we enjoyed our rewards groups.
Homework mindmaps will resume from next week, have a lovely weekend Donaldson ready for our full week of learning next week!
Miss Mason
Spring term 2 we looked at "Once upon a time."
We've had a super short week this week, finishing off our topic with 'Early Easter activities'
In literacy we have been reading 'We're going on an egg hunt.' We were excited to read this story and loved finding the eggs on every page, we especially loved the wolf being behind the big egg on the last page. We have completed two activities linking to our story this week, these were to make our own chocolate easter eggs, following our visual instructions to help us know what to do. Miss Baker melted the chocolate and we helped to mix and pour the chocolate into the egg moulds. We could then add sprinkles to make them colourful and put them in the fridge to set. We enjoyed eating these! On Wednesday we decorated our own Easter egg pictures, with colours, tissue paper and a baby chick to go on top. Some of us could write a caption for our Easter egg.
In maths this week, we have enjoyed our usual counting songs and have started looking at Measure: Position and direction. We looked at positional language by placing the Easter egg in various places. Some of us could put the egg 'on top, inside, behind, next to and left and right of the box'. The rest of us focused on 'on top and inside'. We all did very well at listening, following instructions and using the visuals to support our learning.
In topic this week, we did some communication linking to our topic. We watched the signed song for '5 little Easter Eggs' on Singing Hands. We could then sign to Miss Mason what colour egg we wanted, some of us signed, yellow, gold and green. On Tuesday in topic, we made Easter nests/ cornflake cakes. Again, we used visual instructions to help us make the cakes, we could mix the cornflakes and chocolate, pour and scoop into the cake cases. We made so many cakes there was even enough for our friends in Rosen class. Miss Mason was very proud of the children for sharing and handing the cakes out to Rosen; showing kindness and a sense of responsibility. On Wednesday, in Understanding of the world we went to forest schools on an 'Easter egg hunt'. We could find the chocolate eggs and enjoyed eating these at forest schools, in the afternoon we enjoyed our PE/ rewards for our last day.
In your child's bag is the homework mind map for over the Easter holidays and an Easter egg from Miss Mason as a treat for all your hard work this half term!
Have a fantastic Easter Break Donaldson class, stay safe and we look forward to having you all back on Tuesday 19th April.
From Miss Mason and the team.

What a busy week in Donaldson, we have enjoyed the sunshine this week!
In literacy this week we have been reading our last once upon a time story, “Little Red Riding Hood”. We have done lots of activities around the story including making our own baskets for Little Red Riding Hood. Later in the week some of us decorated the wolf character from the story using feathers and the rest of us sequenced the story using language such as “beginning, middle and end”. In phonics this week, phase 2 have consolidated sounding and writing “s, a, t, p, i, n” and phase 3 have been doing assessment and consolidation of all the sounds.
In maths this week we have looked at measure (weighing). At the beginning of the week we could explore the scales and weigh different toy foods. We learnt how the scale moved and how it measured the food as “heavy and light”. Later in the week some of us had pictures of scales and symbols to place on the heavy and light side. This allowed us to demonstrate our estimating skills. The rest of us explored the scales again using “heavy and light” symbols for visual and physical understanding.
In topic this week, we continued with our makaton signing, we learnt everyday symbols that we can use to communicate in the classroom. For our focus lesson we signed different foods in Little Red Riding Hood’s basket. On Tuesday in topic, we made banana muffins by following a symbol instructions menu, some of us could read and point to help Miss Mason with which ingredients came next. On Wednesday, we went to forest schools as a whole class and pretended to be Little Red Riding Hood going to Grandma’s, we even took her basket with our banana muffins for Grandma (except we ate them!). For PE, we enjoyed gross motor movements on the bikes and water play using the water shooter, demonstrating our push and pull skills. On Thursday, in PSD we acted out the story of Little Red Riding Hood using wooden characters and some us expressively made marks using a paint bag. In the afternoon, we made our Mother’s Day cards. On Friday, we made our wolf biscuits using chocolate chips for the wolf’s hair.
Also below are some pictures and video of some fantastic homework in Donaldson Class, I am very proud!
Have a lovely weekend Donaldson Class and I hope you all enjoy Mother’s Day.

Last term we looked at "People who help us"
W/C 24.05.2021
This week has been our last week on People who help us and we have learnt about People who help us at school. We have learnt about various people such as Teachers and other important people in school.
In maths this week, we have been learning about ‘colours of uniform’ and using our prior knowledge to see if we could remember significant people who help us in our community. We did an activity on matching the correct uniform to the correct person. Some of us could match all three people’s uniform (firefighter, nurse and police) and could tell me what they were called and how they help us. One of us, hummed the 5 little firemen song whilst doing our work, showing clear understanding of the objective. We all could match the uniform to at least one significant person who helps us. Later in the week, we completed another activity, linking the vehicles to the significant people. We all did this really well and enjoyed looking at the different pictures of vehicles.
In literacy this week, we have read the story: ‘People who help us: at school’. The story talked about the routine at school and we could link our routines to the story. For example, the story mentioned, counting and music time. Some of recognised that we do this during our school day just like in the story. The activities we did linking to this story were mark making and creating our own self -portraits, showing what we like to do at school. Some of us could express, write and tell me what they like to do at school. Some of the examples being, Waka waka – dancing, numbers, letters, singing and bubbles. Also, we made a collage of ourselves in our uniform by having a Moor Hey jumper, trousers and a picture of our faces. We look fantastic on our People who help us display! On Friday, we used the playdough to mould and manipulate it to make a face, some of us used additional materials to make a face, for example, googly eyes, beads and pipe cleaners for our hair. We have had lots of fun this week.
In topic, we have focused on ‘All the fun things we like to do at school’. We have made gloop and added food colouring to make the gloop go various colours. On Tuesday, we role played being a teacher by helping Teddy put on a school jumper, we did a very good job! In literacy this week we have been reading 'We're going to the dentist' story. We have learnt about lots of things, like how a dentist helps us and how many times a day we should brush our teeth. We've done various activities like brushing the crocodiles teeth using a toothbrush and real toothpaste. We also stuck teeth on the mouth making a smiley picture, this activity also helped our fine motor skills when picking the teeth up and sticking them on the paper.
This week in maths we have been looking at 'Prepositions', through understanding when an object has been moved and where it has been moved. We all could follow instructions with a preposition in, for example, 'On top of the box' and 'inside the box'. Some of us could understand some more challenging prepositions like 'in front' and 'behind'. Later in the week we did this but with pictures. Some of us did this really well and some us preferred the real objects. Today, we have used the beebots to programme them to go a certain direction. We could all hold, touch and press the buttons on the beebot. Some of us could give an instruction to tell the beebot to go 'forwards,' 'backwards' and we had a challenge to see if we could instruct the beebot to go left or right.
This week in topic, we did a squiggle whilst you wiggle using toothbrushes with white paint to brush the teeth on the paper. On Tuesday, we made our very own toothbrushes using lolly pop sticks, cotton wool and sequins to decorate them. On Wednesday, we had a new dentist kit and we used the different tools to fix and look after the teeth. Then on Thursday we made some teeth biscuits using icing pens and white marshmallows, they were very yummy!

In maths this week we have been 'Exploring weighing objects' and some of us have been looking at mathematical language such as 'light and heavy'. On Tuesday we used the double sided scales to weigh various objects in. We all enjoyed watching the scales balance and move from side to side. Some of us identified that when one side was down it meant that it was the heaviest side. We used our trial and error skills to try and get the scale to balance at the same time, this was a tricky concept to grasp! Later in the week, we put our estimation skills to the test and we held objects in our hands to see if we could feel the weight of them. Some of us could then categorise them into two groups.
This week we have been learning about Postmen and women and what job they do to help in the community.
In literacy this week we have been reading a story called 'Postman bear' by Julia Donaldson. Then we completed various activities linking to our story, we started by making our own post cards. We learnt about what a post card is used for. Some of us did patterns and lines and some of us wrote names like 'Mummy'. On Wednesday, we decorated an envelope for our post cards to go in. We stuck lots of different colours of tissue paper to make them look colourful. On Friday, we posted our letters through the post box. We showed lots of enthusiasm towards doing this activity and enjoyed the experience.
In topic this week we have been learning about 'What does a postman do?' On Monday we did a squiggle whilst you wiggle using the small world people to print paint on large paper. One of us said that 'the post man needs to walk on the path at the side of the road and not in the road'. On Tuesday, we created our very own post boxes which have gone on our display in class. We learnt that most post boxes in England are red but we could create our own coloured post boxes. On Wednesday, we decorated our own stamps and had some discussions that a stamp helps our letters get to where they need to go. On Thursday, we decorated our very own post men/ lady biscuits using red icing sugar for the uniform and silver chocolate balls for the buttons, they were very tasty!
On Friday we have enjoyed some rewards time on the big Primary yard using the bikes and scooters. Well done Monkey Puzzle, another fantastic week of learning!
W/C - 03.05.2021
Although this week has been a shorter week, we have still managed to get lots of things done!
In maths this week, we have been looking at "repetitive patterns in various ways." On Tuesday we made patterns on a police car and looked at the two different colours 'yellow and blue'. Everyone's police car was different which was lovely to see! Some of us even identified that we needed to colour in the sirens on the top. On Friday, we made some jails using the cubes, some us showed repetitive patterns using two different colours and some of us could make our jails stand up which made them look real life. We have worked really hard.
In literacy this week, we have been reading the story "Officer George". We went on a mission to help Officer George find the coins using a treasure map. Some of us could find the key using the map and could identify that it was near the sandpit. We really enjoyed this activity and looking at our new shiny coins.
In topic this week we have made Police Officer badges using blue colours and glitter to make them sparkly. They have been put on our 'People who help us' display, Miss Mason is very proud of our work. We have enjoyed our new sensory toys that we have been bought. We love popping and squeezing them. For rewards this week, we are going out on the big Primary yard on the bikes and scooters.
Next week, we are going to learn about Post men and ladies. We have got lots of fun activities planned!
W/C - 26.04.2021
This week we have looked at how a Firefighter helps us. We have learnt what a Firefighter does and what they do to help the community.
In maths, this week we have focused on “modelling taking away with real life objects”. On Monday, we worked on taking away objects by Miss Mason hiding them under a mat, we showed really good understanding and looking skills to find the object that had been taken away. Some of us did this with number lines and could recognise what the total was after taking away an object. On Wednesday, we played a game of bowling and had numbers 1-10 on the skittles. We had to throw the ball and knock down the skittles. Miss Mason “took away” the ones that we knocked down, showing how many were left over. We had to use our team work skills for this game!
In literacy we read “Busy: Fire Station” and then we did some activities around the book, these included: a cut and stick activity of a Firefighter and their uniform. We identified where each part of their uniform went and some of us could name, label and write which parts of the uniform. We really enjoyed this activity. Then later in the week, we made fire pictures using orange and red paint and instead of using paint brushes we used forks to make a “flame” effect.
In topic this week, we have been looking at “How does a Firefighter help us?” On Monday, we used syringes as pretend hose pipes to wash the fire engines and to squirt water. The concept of using the syringe was tricky at first, but with lots of practice we could do it. On Tuesday, we made fire engines biscuits using: icing sugar, red food colouring, Oreos for the wheels and a blue sweet for the lights. We really enjoyed spreading the icing and most of all eating our biscuits. We also made walkie talkies that real firefighters use and these have been stuck in our Monkey Puzzle floor book for everyone to see.
It has been another super week, keep up the hard work Monkey Puzzle and enjoy your long weekend!
W/C - 19.04.2021
This week we have been looking at how a vet helps us. We have learnt that a vet looks after animals instead of people.
In maths this week we have been looking at "addition with objects" in various ways. Some of us could look at adding by retrieving small world animals from under a hidden cloth. This activity really got us engaged and we showed our curiosity to want to explore more. Some of us could count the animals to 10. The rest of us did this but with higher numbers and then explored adding one more and what number that would make.
Later in the week, we did some stamping of animals. We looked at if we could recognise that when we stamped we was adding a pattern each time. Some of us did this to 5, to 15 and some of us even did the challenge were we wrote the numbers underneath the pattern, wow!
In literacy this week we have been reading the story "Busy people: Vet". We did some activities linking to the story, including a picture and putting a stethoscope on the vet. Some of us could name the stethoscope and write a sentence about the picture. Later in the week, we decorated some biscuits by drawing some animals and patterns on them. Here are our finished products:
In topic we have been looking at "Helping animals" just like a vet would. On Monday we did a "Squiggle whilst you wiggle" animal prints with the small world animals. We really enjoyed this! On Tuesday we made our very own bird feeders using bird seeds and coconut oil. We loved stamping the shapes. On Wednesday, we gave the animals a bath using soapy water like when the animals go to the vets. On Thursday, we explored a sensory tray and could retrieve the animals out of the tray.
Because of the lovely weather, we have enjoyed lots of our afternoons having water play. We had lots of fun!
W/C - 12.04.21
This week in maths we have been working on 'Consolidating counting in lots of various ways' and some of us have been working on our numbers between '10-20'. In order to do this we have completed various activities including exploring a 'What's in the box' with mysterious objects in. Some of us did some work on recognising a number line and being able to place our pegs on a particular number and understanding which way we go to find a bigger number. Later in the week, we did an activity using plasters and we had to put them in the nurses bags. Some of us counted to 10 and some of us even started from a given number up to 10. We worked extremely hard!
In literacy this week, we have been reading our new story called "Ness the nurse" By Nick Sharratt. We completed some activities around the story, including: learning about the different equipment that goes in a nurses bag. We learnt some new vocabulary such as: Stethoscope, thermometer, bandage and plaster. Then, we stuck these onto the nurses bags. We have also done a listening activity when Miss Mason and Mr Banks asked us to help the poorly teddy who needed a bandage. We really listened to the instructions and helped teddy.
In topic this week we have learnt about 'how does a nurse help us?' We have done a creative activities and explored various sensory medias around the topic. At the beginning of the week some of us did a 'Squiggle whilst you wiggle' session with blue paint. We rolled the ambulances in the paint along the track. This really helps us with our gross and fine motor movements. Later in the week we joined in with some role play when Miss Gotts was the patient and Miss Mason was the nurse. We had to help Miss Gotts using the equipment out of the nurses bag. We had lots of fun doing this! Then, we made an X ray picture of our skeletons and some of us learnt that our skeleton allows us to move and keeps our bodies upright.
Finally, we've had lots of water, sand play and have really enjoyed the big cars this week, especially with the sunny weather.
On Friday we have completed activities in remembrance of Prince Philip. Some of us made some Prince Jackets using jewels and some of us made some flowers to remember him by. Miss Mason is very proud of our end product!
Last term we looked at "Food, Glorious Food!"
W/C 21.03.2021
This week has been our final week on our topic "Food, Glorious food." We did this with a twist to incorporate Easter into our last week.
In maths this week we looked at 3D shapes, we could explore the shapes and some of us could begin to name them. We found this a little tricky to understand because we could see the 2D faces on the shape, but we worked hard to try and remember the new names. Whilst exploring the new shapes, we could hold one in each hand, build towers and some of us built rockets showing our imaginations.
In literacy this week we looked at the story "We're going on an egg hunt". We were very excited to hear this new story as we all loved, We're going on a bear hunt in Autumn. We could listen to the story everyday for 10 minutes and we found out what happened in the story. When Mr Cockerill came to listen to our story, some of us could tell him what the title of our story was. Our activities around the story were: creating an Easter egg picture and some of us could write a sentence "My Easter egg is.." We also, went on an Easter egg hunt, explored a sensory tray, had chocolate playdough and made Easter chicks using yellow feathers.
In topic we became "Easter artists" and we decorated real egg shells with paints for the chick's home, did a squiggle whilst you wiggle using potatos to print egg shapes and made cornflake cakes. Also we did some dancing to some Easter songs, we especially enjoyed the Easter Chicka Boom song. We really enjoyed these activities during the afternoons.
Have a lovely Easter break Monkey Puzzle,
from Miss Mason.
W/C 14.03.2021
This week we have continued exploring our Food Glorious Food topic. We have really enjoyed exploring lots of different foods this week.
In maths, we have explored 2D shapes (Square, triangle, circle and rectangle) in a shape feely bag. Then we have completed some activities around shapes including, making our own playdough and then pressing the shapes into the playdough and looking at the prints the shape had made. We have also made fruit kebabs using fruits cut into the different shapes. Some of us knew that the kiwi was a triangle, mango - square, pineapple - rectangle and banana was a circle. We really enjoyed making these and eating them afterwards. Then on Friday we drew round some shapes, some of us could explore how many sides each shape has and how they felt.
In literacy we have been reading the story "Don't put your finger in the jelly Nelly". We read the story and we all laughed when Miss' finger was being eaten by an 'alligrater'. The activities we did linking to the story was looking at the different foods in the story by putting our fingers through the pages and finding out what surprise was behind. Some of us could tell Miss what foods they were and we all gave the foods a try, we loved this! We also decorated a snails shell with sprinkles, and then tried some sprinkles after we had finished our work.
In topic this week we have looked at using food in lots of various ways. We completed lots of exciting activities including, making banana milkshakes, some of us could help chop the bananas and switch the blender on, sticking chocolate hoops to an orangutan - linking to our story and making our own fruit pies. We loved the squirty cream the most!
We have continued practising our Makaton signs during communication and have enjoyed lots of time outdoors having water play!
W/C 08.03.2021
We have all settled really well back as a class of 10 this week.
In maths this week, we have been working on adding two groups together to find a total and recognise an amount. Some of us looked at this using 3 hoops and having a group of objects in each hoop and finding out the amount in each group. The rest of us fed groups of the same fruit to the hungry crocodile. Later in the week, some of us then begun to look at what a number sentence looks like and changing the groups to a number sentence/ problem. We began to explore what a + and = represents in a sentence. The rest of us used the cubes to represent two groups of objects.
In literacy this week, we have been reading a story called Someone who swallowed Stanley. This story has linked in with our Science themed week in school. We learnt about why Stanley the plastic bag does not belong in the ocean and what could happen if rubbish gets into the sea and the damage it can cause to our creatures in the ocean. We did some activities like, making our own Stanley bag using various materials and colour, collaged a humpback whale from the story and made turtles using paper plates. We all loved getting creative.
In topic, we have looked at different science experiments, we enjoyed activities including, growing cress seeds, looking at floating and sinking objects in the water tray, animals in the ice and how ice melts (we even got to eat some ice lollies, yum!) and friction, pushing small world cars through paint. We enjoyed exploring the different experiments.
We have also made some very special cards for our Mum's for Mother's Day. Have a lovely day on Sunday!
W/C 01.03.2021
This week we have all really enjoyed our learning. In maths, we have looked at comparing two groups of objects. We did this by looking at the dinosaurs and putting them on two different plates to represent that they had a different amounts, we did this up to 5 and some of us up to 10. We did careful counting to find out what the total was and some of us could write the answers. Later in the week, we looked at this using a different representation such as the cubes. We compared groups by looking at the different sizes of the towers and identified that the bigger it was the more it had.
In literacy we have looked at the story "Supertato" linking to our food glorious food topic. We all really loved this story and learning about the different vegetables in the story. Some of the activities we did were making a superhero plan and what qualities we wanted our superhero's to have. We identified different ones through pictures like: magic, can fly, kind, happy and helpful. Then, we made our own Supertato with real potatoes and materials like, lolly pop sticks, eyes, stars, pipe cleaners and tissue paper for the cape. We were all really proud of our end products!
In topic this week we have been looking at personal hygiene. We listened to different songs which supported us with our activities linking to this, including washing our hands and what we do when we have a bath. Some of us could use different key words such as, soap, wash, sponge and dry. We used glitter to represent our germs and then we followed a washing hands routine. Also, we gave Spider man a bath and could follow instructions of which body parts to wash, like his head, tummy and feet.
We have signed different vegetables this week using Singing Hands - Makaton. Well done Monkey Puzzle!
I am looking forward to having you all back together on Monday 8th March.
W/C - 22.02.2021
This week, we have worked really hard on our new topic.
In maths, we have been working on comparing amounts more or less. We have completed various activities including, feeding the Hungry Caterpillar amounts of fruits that he ate on the different days. Some of us could recognise that the caterpillar ate more fruits on certain days and could go to 10 and beyond. We have also made caterpillar pictures and could stamp up to 10, we really enjoyed doing these! Some of us could complete a computer game of sequencing the caterpillar bodies in order of the numbers.
Last half term we looked at "Rumble in the Jungle".
W/C 8th February 2021
We have had a super week!
In maths this week we have been looking at capacity. We have been practicing tipping and pouring out of containers. Some of us could pour into other cups and containers. We have used different language such as full, empty and half full. Later on in the week some of us could represent what full and half full looked like by shading in a glass using crayons and using pictures. The rest of us continued practicing pouring using two cups at a time.
In literacy this week, we have been reading our new story "The tiger who came to tea." We have completed various activities around our story including painting animals that the children would like to come to the tea party and made invitations for the tiger.
In topic we have looked at celebrations for a party. We completed craft activities including making tiger kites and masks, we painted boxes for our tiger food and put the food in bags to take home. We really enjoyed doing this activity, they were our very own creations!
On Thursday and Friday we had a tea party and the Tiger came to the tea party. We had cupcakes with icing on. They were very yummy! Some of us could pour the milk from the jug to the cups for all our guests at the party. We practiced signing different drinks using Singing Hands such as water and milk.
Have a lovely half term break Monkey Puzzle.
W/C 1st February
This week we have done lots of different things!
In maths, we have been looking at routines and the days of the week. We created a day and night picture and looked at the colours which represented each picture, some of us stuck a sun and a moon on to show which picture was which. Then, later on in the week we stuck on two routines we complete during the day and at night time. Some of us acted out a routine, for example: Brushing the baby's teeth and putting the baby to sleep with a blanket. We all worked really hard!
In literacy, we read our new story 'Night Monkey Day Monkey'. We completed various activities around the story including collaging a picture of the bat and an observational picture of the frog using the correct colours.
In topic, we have focused on sensory jungle creatures and we all created an elephant handprint, each one is unique and represents us in Monkey Puzzle. We also made a parrot by sticking different coloured feathers on, we enjoyed doing this!
Other activities we have completed are practicing signing our days of the week using Singing hands. Maybe you could keep practicing signing these at home.
W/C - 25th January
We have been super busy this week in Monkey Puzzle!
This week we have had a focused theme week called "Amazing Australia", this has tied in really nicely with our current topic 'Rumble in the Jungle.'
In maths, we have looked at size and height and ordering them from biggest to smallest. We did this through various activities such as: looking at two kangaroo teddys and understanding which one is big and small. Some of us ordered 3 kangaroo pictures in size order. We also fed the kangaroo some grass and this helped us to understand that the bigger the kangaroo the more grass it would need, some of us wrote down how many pieces of grass the hungry kangaroo ate. Then, we made kangaroo homes with lego blocks and this helped us to understand how big the house would need to be by measuring the kangaroo next to the house.
In literacy, we have read our new book called "I love you, blue kangaroo."
We completed various activities around the story including, creating our own kangaroo picture. We learnt that Lily's kangaroo (in the story) was blue and that the children's kangaroo's could be any colour or pattern they wanted; all of them are unique and special. We have also explored a sensory jungle in the water tray with big and small animals in there. Some of us could use the scooping scissors to retrieve the small animals, we all enjoyed looking, putting our hands in and splashing around in the jungle.
In topic, we have been making some jungle creations.
We have used our creativity skills this week by putting our fine motor skills to the test.
Some of our creations include: making an emu using chocolate hoops, we had to put the hoops on carefully using glue. We also made a pasta snake by threading pasta onto a pipe cleaner, this was tricky work but we all did it! Then, at the end we added googly eyes so the snake could see. Finally, some of us put our tasting skills to the test. We made "fairy bread" (A tradtional Australian, children's party food) with bread, butter and hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top. Some of us looked at it, ate it and most of us enjoyed the sprinkles the most!
Other activities we have completed are, listening to Australian songs, signing different jungle animals and other animals like camel and kangaroo. We have enjoyed the outdoors, making obstacle courses, playing catch and kicking a football.
W/C - 4th January
We have been looking at the story 'Monkey Puzzle' and we have done lots of activities around this story. We have looked at different jungle animals within the story and lots of us could name the different ones. Some different activities we have completed in literacy are: animal collages, animal masks, animal puppets and some of us could order the story using pictures. We all really enjoyed these activities! We have started to do dough gym in a morning to really work on our fine motor skills in order to help us become really good writers. Alongside this, we have worked on 'Squiggle whilst you wiggle'. We painted on a large piece of paper using banana skins; some of us really enjoyed doing this!
In maths we have been working on 'matching an amount to a numeral from numbers 1-5', we have done lots of different activities to help us with our maths skills, such as, feeding a number of bananas to the very hungry Monkey, representing numbers by finding a number of objects, slotting and completing jigsaw puzzles. We also really like our counting songs on BBC Teach, they really help us to join in with the number actions and support us to use our fingers to count.
In topic we looked at 'Animals that move fast and slow'. We watched the 'Hare and the Tortoise story' and learnt about which animal won and why. We looked at different habitats animals live in and we explored an animals home in the tough tray by having Weetabix and Brown paint to look, touch and feel.
This half term we have been learning about Autumn.
We enjoyed sharing the books 'We're going on a bear hunt' and 'Goldilocks and the three bears' we explored all of the elements of the stories with a sensory approach.
We got messy by splashing and 'sploshing' in water, painted long wavy grass and made very messy muddy footprints using brown paint! Some of us made brilliant bear caves to hide in and practise our growling.
We also enjoyed going on our own bear hunts down to the forest schools area; walking through the long grass and hiding in the trees and bushes. Best of all we weren't scared!
